Al-Layth (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) refused to be taken captive, so they fought him and martyred him, and they also martyred his two sons and his companions who had fought on his behalf, at a place called al-Taff. Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn, Sayyidah Fatimah bint al-Husayn and Sayyidah Sukaynah bint al-Husayn were taken to Ubaydullah bin Ziyad, and Ali at that time was a youth who had reached puberty. He sent them to Yazid bin Mu'awiyah, who gave orders concerning Sukaynah and placed her behind his throne so that she would not see the head of her father and her relatives, while Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) was bound in chains at that time. Then he (Yazid) placed his (Sayyiduna al-Husayn's (may Allah be pleased with him)) head (before him), struck (with a stick) the two front teeth of Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and said:

We split the skulls of men who are dear to us, though they were the most disobedient and the most unjust towards us.

So Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse in reply: "No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves except that it is in a Book before We bring it into being; indeed, that is easy for Allah" [Surah al-Hadid: 22]. It weighed heavily on Yazid that he had cited a line of poetry and Sayyiduna Ali had recited in reply a verse from the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, so Yazid said: "Rather, it is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much" [Surah al-Shura]. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Listen, by Allah! If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw us in chains, he would love for us to be freed from the chains." He said: You have spoken the truth; free them from the chains. He said: "And if we stood at a distance before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would love to bring us near." He said: You have spoken the truth; bring them near. Then Sayyidah Fatimah and Sayyidah Sukaynah began raising themselves up to see the head of their father, and Yazid began raising himself up in his gathering to hide their father's head from them. Then he ordered that their provisions be prepared, he treated them well, and they were sent off to Madinah.

I said: O Messenger of Allah, has someone angered you? Why do I see your eyes overflowing? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) has just risen and left me, and he told me that my Ummah will kill my son Husayn. Then (Jibril) said: Would you like me to show you some of his soil? I said: Yes. So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the house of Sayyidah Umm Salamah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Salamah! Guard the door for us; let no one come in to us." While she was at the door, Sayyiduna Husayn came, opened the door, and began climbing onto the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was embracing him and kissing him. The angel said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Do you love him, O Muhammad? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while revelation was descending upon him (peace and blessings be upon him). He leapt upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was bent over, and began playing on his back. Jibril (peace be upon him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Muhammad! Do you love him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, why should I not love my son?" Jibril said: Your Ummah will kill him after you. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) stretched out his hand and brought some white soil, and said: O Muhammad! In this land this son of yours will be killed, and its name is al-Taff. When Jibril (peace be upon him) had left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out with the soil in his hand, weeping, and said: "O Aishah! Jibril (peace be upon him) has informed me that my son Husayn will be killed in the land of al-Taff, and that my Ummah will be afflicted with trials after me." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to his Companions, among whom were Ali, Abu Bakr, Umar, Hudhayfah, Ammar and Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with them), and he was weeping. The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah! What has made you weep? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril has informed me that my son Husayn will be killed after me in the land of al-Taff, and he has brought me this soil, and he has informed me that in it is his resting place."

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) were playing in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in my house when Jibril (peace be upon him) came down and said: O Muhammad! Your Ummah will kill this son of yours after you. And he pointed with his hand towards Husayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wept and pressed him to his chest. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This soil is a trust with you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smelled it and said: "Alas for distress (karb) and affliction (bala')!" (Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)) said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Salamah! When this soil turns into blood, then know that my son has been killed." (The narrator) said: So Umm Salamah put it in a small glass bottle, and she would look at it every day and say: The day you turn into blood will be a terrible day.

I heard the sobbing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as he wept, so I looked in, and there was Husayn in his lap, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wiping his forehead and weeping. I said: By Allah! I did not even know when he came in. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) was with us in the house, and he said: Do you love him? I said: As far as this world goes, yes. He said: Your Ummah will kill him in a land called Karbala." Then Jibril (peace be upon him) took some of its soil and showed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, when Husayn was surrounded (at the time of his martyrdom), he asked: What is the name of this land? They said: Karbala. He said: Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth; it is a land of distress (karb) and affliction (bala').

Shayban bin Makhram, who was an Uthmani (that is, among the supporters of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)), said: I was with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he reached Karbala, and he said: "In this place martyrs will be killed whose like among martyrs will be none but the martyrs of Badr." I said (to myself): This is one of his exaggerations. There was the leg of a dead donkey lying there, so I said to my slave: Take the leg of this donkey, drive it into the ground at this very spot, and hide it. Then time passed, until, when Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, I went there with some of my companions, and I saw the body of Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) lying at the spot of that donkey's leg, and his companions lying around him.

He praised and glorified Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and then said: "The matter you see has now befallen us. Indeed, the world has changed and become estranged, its goodness has turned its back, and it has continued like this until nothing of it remains except what is like the dregs left at the bottom of a vessel, except a wretched life like a poisonous pasture. Do you not see that the truth is not acted upon, and falsehood is not restrained? The believer should long to meet Allah. And I see death as nothing but felicity, and life with the oppressors as nothing but hardship." And Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on the day of Ashura, in the year 61 AH, at al-Taff in Karbala.
