Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 2793 — Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali

Al-Layth (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) refused to be taken captive, so they fought him and martyred him, and they also martyred his two sons and his companions who had fought on his behalf, at a place called al-Taff. Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn, Sayyidah Fatimah bint al-Husayn and Sayyidah Sukaynah bint al-Husayn were taken to Ubaydullah bin Ziyad, and Ali at that time was a youth who had reached puberty. He sent them to Yazid bin Mu'awiyah, who gave orders concerning Sukaynah and placed her behind his throne so that she would not see the head of her father and her relatives, while Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) was bound in chains at that time. Then he (Yazid) placed his (Sayyiduna al-Husayn's (may Allah be pleased with him)) head (before him), struck (with a stick) the two front teeth of Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and said:

We split the skulls of men who are dear to us, though they were the most disobedient and the most unjust towards us.

So Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse in reply: "No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves except that it is in a Book before We bring it into being; indeed, that is easy for Allah" [Surah al-Hadid: 22]. It weighed heavily on Yazid that he had cited a line of poetry and Sayyiduna Ali had recited in reply a verse from the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, so Yazid said: "Rather, it is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much" [Surah al-Shura]. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Listen, by Allah! If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw us in chains, he would love for us to be freed from the chains." He said: You have spoken the truth; free them from the chains. He said: "And if we stood at a distance before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would love to bring us near." He said: You have spoken the truth; bring them near. Then Sayyidah Fatimah and Sayyidah Sukaynah began raising themselves up to see the head of their father, and Yazid began raising himself up in his gathering to hide their father's head from them. Then he ordered that their provisions be prepared, he treated them well, and they were sent off to Madinah.
