It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: What is the husband's right over his wife? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She should not refuse herself to him even if she is on a camel's saddle; she should not give anything (in charity) from his house without his permission, and if she does so, the reward will go to the husband and the sin will be upon her; she should not observe any voluntary fast without his permission, and if she does so, she will be sinful and will receive no reward; and she should not go out of his house without his permission, and if she does so, the angels, that is, the angels of wrath and the angels of mercy, will keep cursing her until she repents or returns." It was said: Even if the husband is unjust? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, even if he is unjust."
Musaddad, in the report from Layth through Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, mentioned this addition: on hearing this, the woman said: By the One who sent you as a Prophet with the truth! No man will ever have authority over me (that is, I will not marry at all). A similar report has also been narrated by Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah from Layth through Abd al-Rahim bin Sulayman; while Abd bin Humayd narrated from Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, he through Abu Mu'awiyah from Qutbah, and he from Layth, with wording like the first report, but without mention of the sentence "even if he is unjust". Imam Abu Ya'la narrated through Zuhayr and Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi from Layth, and he through Ata' from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that a woman asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then he narrated the whole hadith like that of Jarir, but did not mention the additional words at its end.
According to the hadith scholars, all this variation in the chain is due to Layth bin Abi Sulaym, and he is a da'if (weak) narrator.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman of the tribe of Khath'am came into the noble presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has no husband; so tell me, what is the husband's right over his wife? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is the husband's right over his wife that if he asks for her (for intimacy) while she is (riding) on the back of a camel, she should not refuse him; and it is the husband's right over his wife that she should not observe a voluntary fast without his permission, and if she does so, she will merely remain hungry and thirsty and (in terms of reward) her fast will not be accepted.
And it is the husband's right over his wife that she should not give anything from his house (to anyone) without his permission, and if she does so, its reward will go to others (the husband and so on) and its burden will be upon her. And it is the husband's right over his wife that she should not go out of his house without his permission, and if she does so, the angels of the heavens, the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment will keep cursing her until she returns (home) or repents."
Besides Imam Musaddad, Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Bazzar have also narrated this report, and Imam al-Bazzar added at the end of his report that (on hearing the importance of these rights) the woman said: I will never marry.

It is narrated from a Companion of the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from Yemen (after conveying the religion), he said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I saw people there prostrating to one another (out of reverence); so should we not prostrate to you (peace and blessings be upon him)? At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I were to order any (created being) to prostrate to another, I would certainly order women to prostrate to their husbands."
Imam al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I mentioned this hadith to Imam Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said (explaining the importance of the husband's right): If a woman were to lick clean with her tongue the discharge of leprosy (judham) from her husband's nose, she still would not fully fulfil his marital right.

Imam al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated with his chain from Sayyidah Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a group of women and, addressing them, said: "Peace be upon you, O you who are ungrateful to your benefactors (husbands)!" Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that the women (on hearing this warning) said: 'Na'udhu billahi an nakfura ni'mat Allah' (We seek refuge in Allah from being ungrateful for the blessing of Allah!) At this he (peace and blessings be upon him), explaining the ingratitude, said: "(The form your ingratitude takes is that) when one of you is angry with her husband, she says (in the heat of emotion): I have never seen any good from you in my whole life!"
In this blessed hadith, kufran al-ashir, that is, forgetting the husband's kindness, has been declared strongly disliked, as it is contrary to human morals and to the religious concept of gratitude.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man brought his daughter to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is my daughter, and she refuses to marry." At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the girl: "Obey your father." The girl kept insisting on her words again and again, and said: "By the One who sent you with the truth! I will not marry until you tell me what the husband's right over his wife is." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the husband had a wound on his body, or blood and pus were flowing from his nostrils, and you licked it clean with your tongue, even then you would not have fulfilled his right." On hearing this she said: "By the One who sent you with the truth! I will never marry." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not marry these women off without their permission."
Imam al-Bazzar narrated this hadith through Ja'far and said: To our knowledge it is narrated only through this chain, and only Ja'far narrated it from Rabi'ah. Further, Imam Ibn Hibban and Imam al-Hakim declared this report sahih (authentic).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman was married to a man. Her father fell ill, so she came into the noble presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, my father is ill, while my husband refuses to give me permission to go and nurse him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Obey your husband."
Then her father passed away, and she asked her husband's permission to attend his funeral prayer, but the husband again refused to give permission. She asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it once more, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) again gave the same instruction: "Obey your husband."
So the woman obeyed her husband and did not attend her father's funeral prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Because of this obedience of yours to your husband, Allah Almighty has forgiven your father."
Imam al-Harith also narrated this same incident with his chain through Yusuf bin Atiyyah, in these words: a man set out on a military expedition; his wife lived on the upper floor of the house while her father lived on the lower floor, and the man had strictly ordered his wife not to go out of the house. Then her father fell ill, and the narrator went on to mention the complete hadith in the same way.

The Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "Yes! (It is a cause of sin.) Your husband's right over you is so binding and great that even if he asks for you while you are riding on a camel's saddle, you should not refuse him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for a woman to take anything from her husband's house without her husband's permission, nor is it permissible for her to take something despite his dislike, nor to go out of the house without his permission while he dislikes it; and as long as the two of them are joined in marriage, she should not make anyone (else) covet him (or the affairs of the house), nor hurt his feelings, nor separate herself from his bed.
And she should not harm him; and even if the husband is the more unjust of the two, she should still come to him until she has pleased him. If he (the husband) accepts it from her, that is very good: Allah will accept her excuse and make her plea succeed, and there will be no sin upon her. And if the husband refuses to be pleased, then she has fulfilled her responsibility by conveying her excuse to him.
But if she does none of this and remains content with cutting off relations until three nights have passed, or she gives someone permission (to enter the house) without her husband's permission, or goes out in his absence without his permission to visit her father or for some other matter, or breaks his oath, or obeys her father or her child in that matter, or separates herself from the bed, or hurts his feelings, then as long as they keep doing so, three major sins will continue to be written against them: the greatest of sins, associating partners with Allah; killing a believer deliberately; and the third, consuming usury (riba).
It is enough sin for a woman that whenever her husband is angry with her she bears the burden of these three major sins; Satan has overpowered her and she becomes one of the people of the Fire."
The narrator says: Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated this hadith to us, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels continually curse such a woman, Allah Almighty curses her too, and the keepers of the abodes of mercy and punishment (Paradise and Hell) also curse her, because she has violated the limits by disobeying Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
This is a hadith whose narrators are all thiqat (trustworthy) and firm, except for the teacher of Imam Abu Ya'la (Sufyan bin Waki'); it is among his munkar (rejected) reports. He was truthful in himself, but his scribe (warraq) inserted into his narrations things that were not part of his hadiths; the hadith scholars used to warn him about this, but he did not desist.
Imam al-Hakim narrated it through another route, through Ata' al-Khurasani from Malik bin Yukhamir al-Saksaki; therefore the difference between the wording of the two reports should be taken into consideration.

So we went back into his (peace and blessings be upon him) noble presence and asked about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means that you betray them in their rights and begin giving their wealth away as gifts to others (without their consent)."
