Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married him to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), he gave her as her dowry a sheet, a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, two hand mills, a water-skin and two pitchers. One day Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): "By Allah! I have drawn water until my chest has become painful, and Allah Almighty has given your father captives; go and ask him for a servant." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah! I grind flour, and as a result the skin of my hands has become blistered." Then Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O my daughter, what have you come for?" She said: "I have come to greet you with salam." She felt too shy to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and she went back just like that. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What happened?" She replied: "I felt too shy to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then the two of them came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) together. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I draw and carry water, and as a result I have pain in my chest." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I grind flour, and as a result the skin of my hands has become blistered. Now Allah Almighty has granted you captives and ample means, so give us a servant." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! It cannot be that I give to you and leave the People of the Suffah, whose stomachs are folded over from hunger; I do not find the means to spend on them. I will sell these slaves and spend their price on the People of the Suffah." The two of them went back. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to their house; at that time the two of them had already lain down to sleep. Their blanket was such that if they covered their heads their feet were exposed, and if they covered their feet their heads were exposed. The two of them began to get up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay where you are!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you both of something that is better for you both than what you asked me for?" The two of them said: "Yes indeed!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are some words which Jibril taught me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After every prayer, both of you recite 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah) ten times, 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah) ten times and 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) ten times; and when you both lie down on your bed, recite 'Subhan Allah' 33 times, 'Al-hamdu lillah' 33 times and 'Allahu akbar' 34 times." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Since I heard this from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I have never given up reciting these words."
The narrator states: Ibn al-Kawwa' asked him: "Not even on the night of the Battle of Siffin?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people of Iraq, may Allah Almighty destroy you! Yes, not even on the night of the Battle of Siffin (that is, I did not give up reciting them)."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this narration is mentioned in the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once the poor Muslims said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the well-off had been granted superiority over them. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, our brothers affirm the truth as we affirm it, they have believed as we have believed, they fast as we fast, but they have wealth from which they give charity, through which they maintain the ties of kinship, and which they spend in the way of Allah, whereas we are poor and do not have the ability to do so." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of something which, when you do it, you will reach the excellence that those people have? After every prayer, recite 'Allahu akbar' eleven times, recite 'Al-hamdu lillah' the same number of times, recite 'La ilaha illallah' the same number of times, and recite 'Subhan Allah' the same number of times; then you will reach the like of their excellence."
The narrator states: So those people did so. Then they mentioned this to the well-off, and the well-off also began to do this. The poor people came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), mentioned this situation to him and said: "These brothers of ours have also begun to recite just as we recite." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the bounty of Allah Almighty; He grants it to whomever He wills. O company of the poor, shall I not give you glad tidings? The poor Muslims will enter Paradise half a day before the rich, and that (half day) will be 500 years."
