Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16912

Sayyidah Umm al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A man came and stayed with Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Will you be staying, so that we arrange for your stay, or are you a traveller, so that we arrange provisions for the journey?" He said: "Rather, I am a traveller." Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will give you provisions for the journey; had I found provisions more excellent than these, I would have given them to you." Then he related: Once I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the well-off have taken away the good of this world and the Hereafter. We pray and they also pray, we fast and they also fast, but they give charity and we are unable to give charity." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not guide you to something which, when you do it, no one before you will be able to surpass you and no one after you will be able to reach you, except a person who does the same deed as you have done? After every prayer, recite 'Subhan Allah' 33 times, 'Al-hamdu lillah' 33 times and 'Allahu akbar' 34 times."
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it with various chains; the narrators of one of al-Tabarani's chains are the narrators of the Sahih.
