Al-Tabarani states: (His name and lineage are as follows:) Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam bin Khuwaylid bin Asad bin Abd al-Uzza bin Qusayy bin Kilab bin Ka'b bin Lu'ayy bin Ghalib bin Fihr bin Malik. His kunyah was Abu Abdullah. His mother was Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

An elder who came from Mosul narrates: I accompanied Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) on one of his journeys. He became in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) in a barren, waterless place, and he said: "Screen me." So I screened him. When I glanced at his body, I saw that it bore many marks of swords. I said: "By Allah! I see a great many scars on you; I have never seen so many on anyone." He asked: "Have you seen them?" I replied: "Yes." He said: "By Allah! Every one of these wounds was received with the Messenger of Allah (while fighting alongside him) and in the path of Allah."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the elder from Mosul; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar narrates: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) met face to face on the day of the Battle of the Camel. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him): "If you will not fight alongside us, then do not help against us." Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Would you like me to leave you and go back?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes! How could I not like that, when you are the son of the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah, the son of the maternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah, the disciple of the Messenger of Allah, and the sword of the Messenger of Allah?" His saying "the disciple of the Messenger of Allah" means that he was among the closest confidants of the Messenger of Allah. And being the brother-in-law (silf) of the Messenger of Allah means that Sayyidah Aishah bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was the wife of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him). His words "the sword of the Messenger of Allah" are because Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first to draw a sword in the path of Allah. His words "the son of the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah" are because the mother of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), was the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And his saying "the son of the maternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah" is because the mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Sayyidah Aminah bint Wahb (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was from her clan.

He was the renowned horseman and the champion, and when the day of battle came he would charge. When war bared its shin, he would race towards death and cut it down.
