Amir al-Sha'bi narrates: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Siffin, he appointed Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy over Kufa. Some people of Kufa had been hiding from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) left, those people came out into the open. They began coming to Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and saying: By Allah! Allah Almighty has destroyed his enemies and given victory to the believers. Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! I do not count it as a victory; there is no well-being in one of these two groups prevailing over the other. The people said: Then what is it? He said: There should be reconciliation between the people. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, the people mentioned this to him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Step down from our office! He asked: Why is that? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have found that you have no sense. He said: As for me, according to the sense that remains with me and what I know, the other outcome is worse.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Mujalid bin Sa'id, whom al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mother of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him); she was a woman who used to treat the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with great kindness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O Umm Abdullah! How are you? She submitted: O Messenger of Allah! I am well, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you; how are you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am well. She submitted: Abdullah is a man who has detached himself from the world. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: How so? The lady said: He has made sleep unlawful for himself, so he does not sleep; he does not leave off voluntary fasting, he does not eat meat, and he does not give his wife her right. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is he? The lady said: He has gone out; he will come shortly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When he comes back, keep him here. The lady narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left, then Abdullah came, and shortly afterwards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also returned. He said: O Abdullah bin Amr! What is this that has reached me about you? He submitted: O Messenger of Allah! What is it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It has reached me that you do not sleep and do not leave off any voluntary fast. He submitted: By this I intended to remain safe from alarm on the Day of the Great Alarm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It has reached me that you do not eat meat. He submitted: By this I intended (to attain) food that will be better than it and that will be given in Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It has reached me that you do not give your family their right. He submitted: By this I intended to attain women who will be better than them and who will be given in Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdullah bin Amr! For you there is the best example in the way of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah keeps voluntary fasts and also leaves them; he sleeps (at night) and also offers voluntary prayers; he eats meat, and he gives his family their right. O Abdullah! Indeed Allah Almighty has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your wife has a right over you." He submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Permit me to keep voluntary fasts for five days and leave off one day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! He submitted: Should I fast four days and leave off one day? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! He submitted: Should I fast three days and leave off one day? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! He submitted: Should I fast two days and leave off one day? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! He submitted: Then should I keep a voluntary fast one day and leave it the next? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That is the way of fasting of my brother, Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him). O Abdullah bin Amr! What will your state be when you remain among the dregs (or the worst) of people, whose covenants and pledges will have come to nothing, and they will become like this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while interlacing his fingers in opposite directions. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: Then what do you command me? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Adopt what you recognise as good and leave what you recognise as evil; act only for your own self, and leave the people and their general affairs (to themselves)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his hand, walked along with him, placed his hand in the hand of his father, and said: "Obey your father." The narrator narrates: When the time of the Battle of Siffin came, his father said to him: O Abdullah! Go out and fight. He submitted: O dear father! Are you commanding me to go out and fight, when you heard what you heard on the day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the instruction he gave? Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, O Abdullah bin Amr: was not the last instruction the Messenger of Allah gave you this, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took your hand, gave it into my hand and then said: "Obey your father"? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: Yes. Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I insist that you go out and take part in the fighting. So he went out with a sword hanging from his neck. When the fighting began, Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses: "The war has flared up, and I have prepared for it: I have girded up my resolve and strengthened my back; I have joined one binding to another; when the rope leaps from the binding, it becomes swift; the great camel's body is full, and when it is drenched with water, it looks with a hot (i.e. angry) glance." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses: "If a camel were one day to experience (the state of) my standing and presence at Siffin, its hair would turn white; that evening when the people of Iraq came, as if they were spring clouds raised by the southern winds; and we came to them as if thrown down, and our ranks were like the waves of the sea riding upon one another in ebb and flow; when I thought that they would swiftly turn their backs, their squadrons appeared before us, squadrons moving with zeal; all day long our millstone turned and their millstone turned too, and the shoulders did not turn away; they said to us: We think that you should give allegiance to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); and we said: We do not think that you should fight." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of the beginning of this narration is mentioned in the "Sahih".
Al-Tabarani recorded it through the narration of Abd al-Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi from Amr bin Shu'ayb; the narrator Abd al-Malik was declared thiqah (trustworthy) by Yahya bin Ma'in and others, while Abu Hatim and others declared him da'if (weak).

Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami narrates: We were present with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at the Battle of Siffin. We had appointed two men to look after his horse. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a little negligence on the part of these men, he mounted his horse and went into the enemy army; when he came back, there was blood on his sword. He said: O my companions! Hold me excused, hold me excused. Whenever we made a truce, the people of this side would go into the camp of the other side. Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) was a sign for the Companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); whichever valley of Siffin Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) took, the Companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would follow him. The narrator says: We came to Hashim bin Utbah bin Abi Waqqas, who had set up the banner. He said: O Hashim! What is the matter with you? Are you one-eyed or cowardly? There is no good in a one-eyed man who cannot charge at the people. So Hashim pulled out the banner and recited these verses: "A one-eyed man seeks a way for his wife; he lives life in such a way that he grows weary; so it is necessary that he should break the fury, or be broken himself." Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Come forward! For Paradise is beneath the shade of the swords, and the wide-eyed houris have adorned themselves, who are with Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions in the Highest Company. The narrator says: Then both of them were martyred before they came back. Whenever we made a truce, the people of this side would go into the camp of the other side, and the people of that side into the camp of this side. (On one such occasion) I looked and saw four men riding along: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu al-A'war al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and his son (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him)). I thought to myself: If I go along on the right side, I will not be able to hear what they say. So I spurred my horse and came in between them, so that two of them were on my right and two on my left. I listened attentively to what Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu al-A'war (may Allah be pleased with him) were saying, and I also listened attentively to what Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and his son Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) were saying. I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) say to his father: O father! We have martyred this man (i.e. Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)), while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said a particular thing about him. He asked: Which man? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him). Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when the mosque was being built and we were carrying one brick at a time while Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was carrying two bricks at a time, and you were in a state of hesitation (i.e. at that time you had not accepted Islam), when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)): "Soon a rebellious group will kill you, and you will be among the people of Paradise"? Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Be quiet! By Allah! You are talking nonsense. Did we kill him? He was killed by those who brought him and threw him between our spears. The narrator says: Then it was proclaimed throughout the army of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed by the one who brought him (to the battlefield).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and Ahmad recorded it in abridged form; Abu Ya'la recorded it similarly to al-Tabarani, and al-Bazzar recorded only these words of the narration: "A rebellious group will kill Ammar", from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) alone. The narrators of Ahmad and Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up in distress and went to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What has happened? He said that Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) had been martyred. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) has been martyred; so what? Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A rebellious group will kill him." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: You are saying something wrong. Did we kill him? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions caused him to be killed; they brought him (to the battlefield), until they threw him between our spears (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) between our swords.
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih except Muhammad bin Amr, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Kulthum bin Jabr narrates: We were at Wasit al-Qasab with Abd al-A'la bin Abdullah bin Amir. There was a man with him called Abu Ghadiyah. He asked for something to drink, and water was brought to him in a vessel plated with silver, but he refused to drink from it. He mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated this hadith from him, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not become disbelievers (the narrator is in doubt, and the words may be:) misguided after me, striking one another's necks." That man said: A man was reviling so-and-so, and I said: By Allah, if Allah Almighty ever gives me power over you during a battle, then you will see. Then came the battle of Siffin, and that man came before me wearing armour. I saw an opening in the armour, so I thrust my spear there and killed him, and that man was Ammar bin Yasir. The narrator says: I said: What a strange man this is! He considers it disliked to drink from a vessel plated with silver, yet he martyred Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him).
Abdullah recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. Al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and he also recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in a more complete form; it will come later in the chapter on the virtue of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him).

When he saw this, he said: "By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give me any special instruction, except the same things he (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined upon the people. But when the people turned against Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and martyred Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), others besides me were worse in their state and in their conduct. He said: I became weak on the day Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred. So the lion says to the black and the red bull: In this area of ours, this white bull is bringing disgrace upon us; so give me the chance to eat it. Your colour is like mine, and my colour is like yours. Then the lion attacks it and eats it. A little later it says to the black bull: In this area of ours, this red bull is bringing disgrace upon us; give me the chance to eat it, for my colour and yours are alike, and your colour and mine are alike. Then it attacks that bull and eats it too. Then it says to the black bull: Now I will eat you. The black bull says: Give me the chance to call out something three times in a loud voice. Then the bull says: I was eaten on the very day the white bull was eaten. Beware! I was eaten on the very day the white bull was eaten. Beware! I was eaten on the very day the white bull was eaten. (Then Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said:) Beware! I became weak on the very day Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. I do not know the narrator named Umayr; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Mujalid bin Sa'id, about whom there is disagreement.
