Amir al-Sha'bi narrates: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Siffin, he appointed Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy over Kufa. Some people of Kufa had been hiding from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) left, those people came out into the open. They began coming to Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and saying: By Allah! Allah Almighty has destroyed his enemies and given victory to the believers. Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! I do not count it as a victory; there is no well-being in one of these two groups prevailing over the other. The people said: Then what is it? He said: There should be reconciliation between the people. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) returned, the people mentioned this to him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Step down from our office! He asked: Why is that? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have found that you have no sense. He said: As for me, according to the sense that remains with me and what I know, the other outcome is worse.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Mujalid bin Sa'id, whom al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
