Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami narrates: We were present with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at the Battle of Siffin. We had appointed two men to look after his horse. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a little negligence on the part of these men, he mounted his horse and went into the enemy army; when he came back, there was blood on his sword. He said: O my companions! Hold me excused, hold me excused. Whenever we made a truce, the people of this side would go into the camp of the other side. Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) was a sign for the Companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); whichever valley of Siffin Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) took, the Companions of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would follow him. The narrator says: We came to Hashim bin Utbah bin Abi Waqqas, who had set up the banner. He said: O Hashim! What is the matter with you? Are you one-eyed or cowardly? There is no good in a one-eyed man who cannot charge at the people. So Hashim pulled out the banner and recited these verses: "A one-eyed man seeks a way for his wife; he lives life in such a way that he grows weary; so it is necessary that he should break the fury, or be broken himself." Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Come forward! For Paradise is beneath the shade of the swords, and the wide-eyed houris have adorned themselves, who are with Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions in the Highest Company. The narrator says: Then both of them were martyred before they came back. Whenever we made a truce, the people of this side would go into the camp of the other side, and the people of that side into the camp of this side. (On one such occasion) I looked and saw four men riding along: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu al-A'war al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and his son (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him)). I thought to myself: If I go along on the right side, I will not be able to hear what they say. So I spurred my horse and came in between them, so that two of them were on my right and two on my left. I listened attentively to what Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu al-A'war (may Allah be pleased with him) were saying, and I also listened attentively to what Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and his son Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) were saying. I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) say to his father: O father! We have martyred this man (i.e. Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)), while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said a particular thing about him. He asked: Which man? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him). Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when the mosque was being built and we were carrying one brick at a time while Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was carrying two bricks at a time, and you were in a state of hesitation (i.e. at that time you had not accepted Islam), when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)): "Soon a rebellious group will kill you, and you will be among the people of Paradise"? Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Be quiet! By Allah! You are talking nonsense. Did we kill him? He was killed by those who brought him and threw him between our spears. The narrator says: Then it was proclaimed throughout the army of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed by the one who brought him (to the battlefield).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and Ahmad recorded it in abridged form; Abu Ya'la recorded it similarly to al-Tabarani, and al-Bazzar recorded only these words of the narration: "A rebellious group will kill Ammar", from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) alone. The narrators of Ahmad and Abu Ya'la are thiqat (trustworthy).
