Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came. He confessed before him once, and he sent him back. He came again and confessed before him a second time, and he sent him back. He came again and confessed a third time, and he sent him back. I said to him: "If you confess a fourth time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will have you stoned." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) says: He confessed a fourth time as well, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had him detained. Then he inquired about him, and the people said: "We know nothing of him but good." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be stoned.
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it, and their wording is: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ma'iz (may Allah be pleased with him) back four times and then ordered that he be stoned.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, except that his wording is: He sent him back three times. All of their chains contain Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came to him and said: "This wretched one has committed adultery." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from him. Then he did the same a third time, and a fourth time, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted. On one occasion the narrator used these words: He confessed to adultery before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him back four times. Then he dismounted and ordered us, and we dug a pit for him that was not very deep, and then he was stoned. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, and he was distressed and grieved. We travelled on until we halted at a stopping place. When that state left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to me: "O Abu Dharr, did you not see that man? He has been forgiven and admitted into Paradise."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains al-Hajjaj bin Artah, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in his chain).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon to the people on Friday when a man from Banu Layth bin Bakr bin Abd Manat bin Kinanah came to him. He stepped over the people's necks until he reached him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) on me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Sit down." So he sat down. Then he stood up a second time, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." Then he stood up a third time, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same. Then he asked: "What is your hadd?" He said: "I have had unlawful intercourse with a woman." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to one of his Companions (among those Companions were Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him)): "Take him away and give him one hundred lashes." This man from Layth had not married. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not have the woman with whom he committed adultery lashed?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "First lash him, then bring him to me." When he was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "With whom did you do this?" He named a woman from Banu Bakr and said: "With such-and-such a woman." The woman was brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) questioned her. She said: "By Allah, he is lying. I do not know him, and I am innocent of what he has accused me of, and Allah Almighty is witness to what I am saying." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will testify that you committed adultery with this woman? She denies it. If you have witnesses, we will lash her with the prescribed punishment; otherwise we will lash you for falsely accusing her of adultery." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, who will testify on my behalf?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order concerning him, and he was given eighty lashes as the prescribed punishment for false accusation of adultery. Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Ma'iz bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away. Then he came to him from the other side, and he turned away from him. Then he came from a third side, and he turned away from him. When he came to him the fourth time and said this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Go to your companion; if he is sound, stone him." He was inquired about, and it was found that he was sound (that is, not insane), so he was stoned. When the stones struck him, he fled. One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) confronted him with a camel's jawbone and struck him with it, and he died. The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will go to Hell." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Certainly not! He has repented with such a repentance that, if an entire nation had repented like it, it would have been accepted from them." Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am pregnant; carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) on me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will not kill what is in your womb." The woman went away. When she had given birth, she came and said: "I have given birth." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and nurse him until you wean him (you will not be punished before that)." Then, when she had weaned the child, she came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have weaned him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and look after him." She went away. Then she and her sister came walking. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was struck with wonder at this woman's steadfastness. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that she be stoned. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man: "Go, and when this woman is placed in her pit, stand in front of her so that you are right before her eyes, and speak to her privately."
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that she had committed adultery, and the woman was pregnant. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, and first give birth to what you are carrying." Had she not returned, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have sent for her. Then the woman gave birth and came to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, until you have weaned your child." Then the woman came to him; had she not come to him, he would not have sent for her. She came to him after weaning the child, and he had her stoned.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains al-Harith bin Nabhan, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and confessed to adultery, and the woman was pregnant. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) postponed her case until she gave birth. Then he gave an order concerning her, and her clothes were tied firmly around her body. Then he ordered that she be stoned, and then he led her funeral prayer. A man said to him: "You are leading her funeral prayer when she committed adultery and you had her stoned?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She has repented with such a repentance that, had seventy of the people of Madinah repented like it, it would have been accepted from them as well. Do you find anyone of greater merit than one who sacrificed her own life?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat from his teacher Ali bin Ahmad bin al-Nadr, whom al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) declared da'if (weak), while Ahmad bin Kamil al-Qadi said: To my knowledge he has not been criticised in hadith. The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
