Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon to the people on Friday when a man from Banu Layth bin Bakr bin Abd Manat bin Kinanah came to him. He stepped over the people's necks until he reached him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) on me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Sit down." So he sat down. Then he stood up a second time, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." Then he stood up a third time, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same. Then he asked: "What is your hadd?" He said: "I have had unlawful intercourse with a woman." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to one of his Companions (among those Companions were Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him)): "Take him away and give him one hundred lashes." This man from Layth had not married. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not have the woman with whom he committed adultery lashed?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "First lash him, then bring him to me." When he was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "With whom did you do this?" He named a woman from Banu Bakr and said: "With such-and-such a woman." The woman was brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) questioned her. She said: "By Allah, he is lying. I do not know him, and I am innocent of what he has accused me of, and Allah Almighty is witness to what I am saying." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will testify that you committed adultery with this woman? She denies it. If you have witnesses, we will lash her with the prescribed punishment; otherwise we will lash you for falsely accusing her of adultery." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, who will testify on my behalf?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order concerning him, and he was given eighty lashes as the prescribed punishment for false accusation of adultery. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Abu Dawud and others recorded it in abridged form.
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains al-Qasim bin Fayyad, whom Abu Dawud declared thiqah (trustworthy) and Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
