Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10608

Abd al-Aziz bin Abdullah bin Amr al-Qurashi narrates: Someone who was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a man to be stoned between Makkah and Madinah. When the stones struck him, he fled. When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said (to the people): "Why did you not leave him alone?"
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
