A man from Banu Taym named Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out wearing two coats of armour.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out wearing two coats of armour.
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator who is not named, and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out wearing two coats of armour.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Ishaq bin Abi Farwah, who is da'if (weak).
Ayyub bin al-Nu'man narrates from his father, from his grandfather, who said: On the day of Uhud, I saw two coats of armour on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains al-Waqidi, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held out a sword and said: "Who will take this sword with its right?" Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah Simak bin Kharashah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I will take it with its right. What is its right?" The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the sword. He set off with it and I followed him. Whatever he passed by, he would cut it apart and tear it open, until he came to some women at the foot of the mountain. With them was "Hind", who was reciting these verses: "We are the daughters of Tariq (the star) (that is, we are of high rank), we walk upon carpets, with musk in the parting of our hair. If you advance, we will embrace; and if you turn your backs, we will part, a parting without doubt (or: a parting after which there is no love)." The narrator says: He drew his sword against that woman, and she called out loudly in the open land, but no one answered her; so he did not strike that woman with the sword. I said to him: "Everything you did pleased me, except that I did not like that you did not kill this woman." He said: "This woman called out, but no one answered her, so I did not like to strike, with the sword of the Messenger of Allah, a woman who had no helper."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will take this sword with its right?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." So he sat down. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked a second time: "Who will take this sword with its right?" Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his sword Dhu al-Fiqar. Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him) rose and tied a red band over the upper part of his eyes, to hold back his eyebrows, which drooped over his eyes because of old age. Then he went walking ahead of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the sword.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
Khalid bin Sulayman bin Abdullah bin Khalid bin Simak bin Kharashah narrates from his father, from his grandfather: On the day of Uhud, Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him) marked himself with a red band. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him as he was walking proudly between the two ranks, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty dislikes this kind of gait, except in a situation like this."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the women were behind the Muslims, finishing off the wounded among the polytheists. If I were to swear an oath about that day, I hope I would be truthful: not one of us desired this world, until Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them so that He might test you." When some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went against his command and disobeyed the order they had been given, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was left alone among nine men, seven of them from the Ansar and two from Quraysh, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself was the tenth. When the enemy closed in around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on the man who drives them back from us." So a man from the Ansar rose, fought for a while and was martyred. Then, when they closed in around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on the man who drives them back from us." He kept saying this until the seven were martyred. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his two companions: "We have not done justice to our companions." Then Abu Sufyan came and said: "Hubal is exalted!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: Allah Almighty is Most High and Most Majestic." The people said: "Allah Almighty is Most High and Most Majestic." Abu Sufyan (who was the leader of the disbelievers) said: "We have al-Uzza, and you have no al-Uzza." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: Allah Almighty is our Protector (Mawla), and the disbelievers have no protector (helper)." Then Abu Sufyan said: "Today is in return for the day of Badr. One day was in our favour and one day was against us; one day we were grieved and one day we have rejoiced. Hanzalah for Hanzalah, and so-and-so for so-and-so." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The two are not equal. Our slain are alive and are given provision, and your slain are in Hell and are being punished." Abu Sufyan said: "Some people have mutilated (your men), though this did not happen on the counsel of our leaders. I neither ordered it nor forbade it; I neither liked it nor disliked it; it neither grieved me nor pleased me." The narrator says: The people looked into the matter, and found that the belly of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) had been ripped open, and Hind had taken out his liver and chewed it, but she could not eat it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did she eat any of it?" The people said: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty would never have let any part of Hamzah enter the Fire." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed the body of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) and offered his funeral prayer. Then a man from the Ansar was brought and placed beside Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered his funeral prayer. Then the body of the Ansari was lifted away and the body of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was left. Then another man was brought and placed beside Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered his funeral prayer. Then the body of that (second) man was lifted away and the body of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was left, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer over Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) seventy times that day.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, whose memory became confused (ikhtilat).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Allah Almighty did not grant help in any situation as He granted help at the Battle of Uhud. The narrator says: We objected to this, so Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Book of Allah will judge between what I am saying and whoever denies it. Allah Almighty said about the Battle of Uhud: "And Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Here "hass" means killing. Allah Almighty says: "Until, when you lost courage", up to His words: "And He has certainly forgiven you, and Allah is the Possessor of bounty towards the believers." By this are meant the archers. The reason is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had stationed them at a particular place and then said: "Protect us from behind. If you see us being killed, do not come to our help; and if you see us gaining spoils, do not join us." Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gained the spoils and the people overran the camp of the polytheists, all those archers came and began collecting things from the camp. When the ranks merged and the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became like this (the narrator interlaced his fingers to describe it) and they became intermingled, and the archers vacated the place where they had been stationed, some enemy horsemen came from that place and attacked the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Many Muslims were martyred that day. In the early part of the day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions were in a state in which seven, or perhaps nine, of the polytheists' standard-bearers had been killed, and some of the Muslims were around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They had not reached the place which people call the cave; rather, they had reached the water spring. Meanwhile, Satan cried out: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has been killed!" No one doubted that this was true. We remained in that state, with no doubt that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been killed, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared walking between two men named Sa'd. We recognised him by his particular manner of walking. The narrator says: We were so happy that it was as if no harm had befallen us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed up towards us, saying: "Allah Almighty's wrath will be severe upon a people who have bloodied the face of the Messenger of Allah." Once he said: "O Allah! They have no right to prevail over us." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached us and stayed for a while. Then Abu Sufyan called out loudly twice from the lower part of the mountain: "Hubal is exalted!", meaning his deity. Then he asked: "Where is Ibn Abi Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abi Quhafah? Where is Ibn al-Khattab?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not answer him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well." When he said: "Hubal is exalted!", Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Allah Almighty is Most High and Most Majestic." Abu Sufyan said: "O son of al-Khattab! Its (that is, Hubal's) eye has given approval, so now do not speak ill of it." Then he asked: "Where is Ibn Abi Kabshah? Where is Ibn Abi Quhafah? Where is Ibn al-Khattab?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Here is the Messenger of Allah, here is Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and here am I, Umar." Abu Sufyan said: "Today is in return for the day of Badr. Days take turns, and war is like a bucket (that is, it has its ups and downs)." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No, it is not equal. Our slain are in Paradise and your slain are in Hell." Abu Sufyan said: "You claim that; in that case we have indeed failed and lost." Then Abu Sufyan said: "You will find among your slain some whose bodies have been mutilated; this was not by the opinion of our leaders." The narrator says: Then the zeal of the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) seized him, and he said: "It has happened, and we do not dislike it."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, who has been declared trustworthy despite his weakness.
Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him): "O uncle! Tell me about your situation on the day of Badr." He said: "Read the verses after one hundred and twenty in Surah Al Imran and you will find mention of our situation. (Allah Almighty says:) 'And when you went out in the morning from your household to post the believers at their positions for battle', up to: 'When two parties among you were about to lose courage.'" (Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) "They were the ones who sought safety from the polytheists. (Allah Almighty says:) 'And you used to wish for death (that is, martyrdom) before you encountered it (the enemy); now you have seen it (that is, the battle, the cause of death or martyrdom), while you were looking on (at the state of the battle).' So he (the enemy) wished to encounter the believers. The verses go up to: (Allah Almighty says:) 'When you were killing them (that is, the disbelievers) by His (that is, the Lord's) permission.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, when the people scattered away from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I looked among the slain, but I did not see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I thought: By Allah! He would not have fled, nor do I see him among the slain. But I feel that Allah Almighty will send down His wrath on us for what we have done; I feel that because of it Allah Almighty has sent down His wrath on us and has taken up His Prophet. So there is nothing better for me than to keep fighting until I am killed. I broke the scabbard of my sword, then charged at the enemy; they scattered here and there, and there was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in their midst.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Marwan al-Uqayli, whom Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Abu Zur'ah and others declared him da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: My father told me: "When the people dispersed from around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I was the first to return to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw a man fighting in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I thought: 'May Allah let this be Talhah.' When I looked, there was a person behind me as well, like a bird. Before I realised it, he had reached me, and it was Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah. Talhah had fallen wounded in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take care of your brother, for he has made (Paradise) obligatory for himself.' We left him and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and two arrows had struck the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I intended to remove them, but Abu Ubaydah kept asking me and requesting (that I give him the chance), until I let him remove one of the two arrows. He gripped it with his teeth and pulled it out, and as a result one of his two front teeth fell out. Then he kept asking and requesting me to let him remove the other arrow as well. Then he placed his front teeth on the arrow and bit down on it, disliking to cause the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) any pain, and pulled that out too; so his two front teeth (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) one of his two front teeth fell out." The narrator says: So Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) was missing his front teeth.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud we came towards the mountain pass, and I was the first to recognise him. I said: "This is the Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to me with his blessed hand to keep quiet. Then he put his armour on me and put on my armour himself. I fought until I received twenty wounds (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) twenty-odd wounds, and all those wounds were inflicted because people took me to be the Messenger of Allah.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir in abridged form; the narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, when the people scattered from around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I said: "I will remain like this: either I will drink the cup of martyrdom or I will be saved, until I reach the Messenger of Allah." While I was in this state, I saw a man whose face was covered; I did not know who he was. The polytheists came and advanced towards him. When I estimated that the polytheists were about to fall upon him, he took pebbles in his hand and threw them at the polytheists, and they went back on their heels until they were facing the mountain. This happened several times, and I did not know who that man was. Miqdad was between him and me. I intended to ask Miqdad about him, when Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) himself said to me: "O Sa'd! The Messenger of Allah is calling you." I asked: "Where is he now?" Miqdad pointed him out to me. I got up, and it felt as though no harm had touched me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Sa'd! Where have you been all day?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me in front of him. I began shooting arrows, saying: "O Allah! This is an arrow I shoot at Your enemy." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "O Allah! Accept Sa'd's supplication! O Allah! Keep Sa'd's aim true. O Sa'd! Keep shooting! May my father and mother be ransomed for you." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: With every arrow I shot, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Keep his aim true and accept his supplication. O Sa'd! Keep going!" until my quiver was empty. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emptied his own quiver in front of me and handed me an arrow that had no feathers, and it was harder to shoot than the others. Al-Zuhri says: The arrows that Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) shot that day numbered one thousand.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Waqqasi, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A bow was given to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to me on the day of Uhud. I shot arrows with it in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until its string broke. I stayed in my place and remained in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to shield the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the arrows with my face. Whenever an arrow veered towards the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would turn my head towards it, so that I could shield the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without shooting back. The last of them was an arrow that made my eyeball fall out into my palm. I ran with it in my palm to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it in my palm, tears flowed from his eyes, and he said: "O Allah! Qatadah has shielded Your Prophet with his own face, so make it the more beautiful of his two eyes and the sharper of them in sight." The narrator says: So it was the more beautiful of his two eyes and the sharper of them in sight.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, I remained in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), shielding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with my own self. Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah Simak bin Kharashah (may Allah be pleased with him) had his back against the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until his back was filled with arrows. This was on the occasion of the Battle of Uhud.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the day of Uhud, only four men remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); one of them was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: I asked my father: "Where was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at that time?" He said: "The banner of the Muhajirun was in his hand."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani, who is da'if (weak).
Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه البزار فى المسند (1790) أخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الكبير (8515) ، أخرجه المعجم الكبير للطبراني برقم: 8515، وأخرجه المعجم الأوسط للطبراني برقم: 8075»
Sayyiduna Mahmud bin Labid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna al-Harith bin al-Simmah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "On the day of Uhud, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mountain pass, he asked me: 'Have you seen Abd al-Rahman bin Awf?' I said: 'Yes! O Messenger of Allah! I saw him at the foot of the mountain, with the polytheists surrounding him. I had begun to head towards him, then I saw you, so I came to you.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The angels are fighting alongside him.'" Sayyiduna al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I then went back to Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) and found him among seven enemies who had been struck down. I said to him: "You have triumphed! Did you kill all of these?" He said: "As for Artat bin Shurahbil and this man, I killed the two of them; but as for the rest, I did not see the one who killed them." The narrator says: I said: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth."
Al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Aziz bin Imran, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the day of Uhud, the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wounded. Sayyiduna Malik bin Sinan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him, sucked the wound of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then swallowed it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever would like to look at a man whose blood has mixed with my blood, let him look at Malik bin Sinan."
Al-Tabarani recorded it.
Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, I saw Hind bint Utbah with the cloth pulled back from her shins, and it is as if I can still see the mark of leprosy on her shin; she was going about urging the people on.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Dirar bin Surad, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) killed the standard-bearers, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! This is true brotherly solidarity." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is from me and I am from him." Sayyiduna Jibril said: "O Messenger of Allah! And I am from you both."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Hibban bin Ali, who is da'if (weak), though according to one report Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah (trustworthy). Muhammad bin Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi' is da'if (weak) according to the majority, while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the Trench (Khandaq), he placed the women in a tall fortified building called "Fari'", and appointed Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) with them. Sayyiduna Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) kept watching the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advanced towards the polytheists, he too would move forward inside the fortress, and when he fell back, he too would move back. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Some people from the Jews came, and one of them climbed up towards the fortress until he reached us. I said to Hassan: "Get up, go to him and kill him." He said: "I cannot do this; if I were capable of anything, I would have gone with the Messenger of Allah." So Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) struck the head of that (Jew) and cut it off. When she had cut it off, Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Pick up his head and throw it at those people, the ones who are below the fortress." He said: "By Allah! I cannot do this either." Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I took hold of that man's head and threw it towards those people. They said: "By Allah! We have come to know that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not leave his family in such a state that there was no one with them." Then they scattered here and there and went away. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), who had a trace of yellow on him, as if he had been married a short while before, and he was reciting this verse: "In a little while the camel will reach the battle; there is no harm in death when the appointed time has come."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, through Umm Urwah bint Ja'far bin al-Zubayr from her father, and I do not know either of them. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, the people of Madinah were thrown into distress. They said: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has been killed!" until the cries of those wailing grew loud in one part of Madinah. A woman from the Ansar went out. She saw her father, she saw her son, she saw her husband and she saw her brother; I do not remember which of them came before her first. Whenever that woman passed by one of them, she asked: "Who is this?" The people told her: "This is your father, this is your brother, this is your husband, this is your son." But that woman kept asking: "How is the Messenger of Allah?" The people told her: "He is coming." Then, when she reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), she took hold of the edge of the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you. Since you are safe, I do not care about anything else."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat from his teacher Muhammad bin Shu'ayb, whom I do not know. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, in Madinah, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). None of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained in Madinah. The number of the slain grew, and someone cried out: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has been killed!" The women began to weep. One woman said: "Do not hasten to weep until I first find out." That woman went out walking, and she had no concern other than the Messenger of Allah and asking about him.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Umar bin Safwan, who is majhul (unknown).
Uqbah, the freed slave (mawla) of Sayyiduna Jabr bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I took part in the Battle of Uhud with my masters. I struck a man from the polytheists, and when I had killed him, I said: "Take this from me! I am a Persian man." When news of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Why did you not say: 'Take this! I am an Ansari youth'? For the freed slave of a people is one of them."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Battle of Uhud came the following year, they were punished for what they had done at Badr in taking ransom. Seventy of them were killed, and the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scattered, leaving him. The blessed tooth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was injured, his helmet was driven into his head, and his blood flowed down onto his face. Concerning this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Why is it that when a calamity struck you, although you had (previously) inflicted twice as much (on the enemy), you said: 'Where has this come from?' Say (O Messenger): 'It is from yourselves (that is, because of you).' Indeed, Allah Almighty has power over all things." That is, it was because of the ransom you had taken.
Al-Tabarani recorded it at the end of the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) which is in the "Sahih", in his large "Musnad".
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of Uhud they said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have not seen anyone fight like so-and-so. He is a man such that the people fled, but he did not flee. He did not leave any polytheist who had broken away from the rest; he went after every one of them and struck him with his sword." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is he?" His lineage was described to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he did not recognise him; then his appearance was described to him, but he did not recognise him. Meanwhile, that man appeared before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! This is the man we were telling you about." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This one?" The people said: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is one of the people of Hell." This weighed heavily on the Muslims, and they said: "Then who among us will be of the people of Paradise, if so-and-so is of Hell?" One of those present said: "O people! Give me a chance. By the One in whose Hand is my soul, this man will not die in the state he is in, and of all of you, I will stay with him from now on." Then that man set out towards the enemy, and the other man began following him: when he advanced, this one advanced too, and when he turned back, this one turned back too. The second man wanted to see what his end would be, until the first man received wounds that weakened him. He hastened his death: he placed the hilt of his sword on the ground, put his chest upon its point and leaned his weight on it, and the sword passed out through his back. Then the second man came running, saying: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I also bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah," until he came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has happened?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! The man who was mentioned to you, about whom you said that he is of the people of Hell, and this weighed heavily on the Muslims, and they said: 'Who among us will be of Paradise, if so-and-so is of Hell?' So I said: 'O people! Give me a chance. By the One in whose Hand is my soul, he will not die in the state he was in before, and of all of you, I will stay with him.' So I kept advancing with him when he advanced, and turning back with him when he turned back, wanting to see what the end of his affair would be, until he received a wound that weakened him. He hastened his death: he placed the hilt of his sword on the ground, put its point on his chest, then leaned his weight on his sword until it passed out through his back. So, O Messenger of Allah, there that man is, writhing." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man does the deeds of the people of Paradise, as it appears to people, while he is of the people of Hell; and a man does the deeds of the people of Hell, as it appears to people, while he is of the people of Paradise." To proceed: your letter has reached me, in which you mentioned that the Romans have gathered their armies. Allah Almighty did not help us alongside His Prophet through great numbers or through many armies. We used to go on campaigns with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with only a few horses among us, and we used to ride camels by turns. On the day of Uhud we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we had only one horse, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding; yet despite this Allah Almighty made us prevail over our opponents and helped us. O Amr! Know that the most obedient of people to Allah Almighty is the one who most hates sins. So obey Allah Almighty and order your companions to obey Him too."
