Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): It was said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! The news from Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) has been slow in reaching you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why would it not be slow, when you people are around me and you neither use the miswak, nor clip your nails, nor trim your moustaches short, nor clean the folds between your finger joints?"
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Ka'b, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Abu Hatim says: he is known only through this hadith. The narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abu Wasil narrates: I met Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and he shook hands with me. He saw that my nails were long, so he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you asks about the news of the heavens, while he leaves his nails like the claws of birds, in which filth, impure things and dirt gather."
Ahmad recorded it. In it his tongue, that is Waki's, slipped, and he said: "I met Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him)," whereas he was Abu Ayyub al-Ataki (whom the narrator had met).
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abu Wasil, who is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you become forgetful?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why would I not become forgetful, when the dirt of one of you is lodged between his nails and his fingertips?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. The narrators of al-Bazzar are thiqat (trustworthy), and so are the narrators of al-Tabarani, if Allah wills.
