Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade shaving the hair of the nape, except that it may be done for cupping.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Bashir, whom Shu'bah and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), whereas Yahya bin Ma'in and others called him da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
