Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The prohibition of wine was revealed in three stages. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, the people used to drink wine and gamble. The people asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about these two things, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse to His Prophet: "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin, and also benefit for people" to the end of the verse. The people said: "In this it has not been forbidden to us; it only says: 'In them is great sin.'" So the people kept drinking wine until, one day, a man from the Muhajirun led his companions in the Maghrib prayer and made mistakes in his recitation. Allah Almighty then revealed a verse about this containing a sterner command (Allah Almighty says): "O you who believe! Do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying." After that the people still drank, until one of them would come to offer the prayer only when his intoxication had worn off. Then a verse was revealed with a command sterner than that (Allah Almighty says): "O you who believe! Wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are filth, part of Satan's work, so avoid them so that you may succeed." The people said: "Our Lord, we have desisted!" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Some people were killed in the way of Allah or died on their beds, and they used to drink wine and gamble, and Allah Almighty has declared it filth and part of Satan's work." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse about it: "There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they ate before, as long as they are mindful (of Allah), believe and do righteous deeds" to the end of the verse. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had it been forbidden to them, they too would have given it up just as you have given it up."
Ahmad recorded it. No one has criticised Abu Wahb, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and no one has declared him trustworthy. The narrator Abu Najih has been declared da'if (weak) because of his poor memory, though more than one scholar has declared him thiqah (trustworthy). The narrator Surayj is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was serving the people a drink of figs and raisins; we had mixed the two together to prepare the drink. Among those present was a man called Abu Bakr. When he drank it, he recited these verses: "I greet Umm Bakr with salam; after your people, is there any peace left for you? The Messenger tells us that we will be brought back to life; then what of the life of the sada (a bird) and the hamah (according to one view this also means a bird, and according to another, the human skull)?" The narrator says: While we were in this state and the people were drinking, a man from the Muslims came to us and said: "What are you doing? Allah Almighty has revealed the command forbidding wine." So we turned away from the wine vessels and poured (the wine) out. Then we went out and found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) standing on the pulpit, reciting this verse and repeating it: "Satan only wants to cause enmity and hatred between you through wine and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer; so will you not desist?" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the prohibition of wine is recorded in the Sahih, but it is different from this hadith.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Matar bin Maymun, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was serving wine to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Suhayl bin Bayda (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him), and their heads were swaying this way and that. Just then we heard a caller announcing: "Listen! Wine has been forbidden." No one came in from outside and none of us went out. We poured out the wine and broke the jar. Some of us performed ablution and some performed a ritual bath. Then we applied some of the perfume that Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) had. Then we went out to the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting: "O you who believe! Wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are impure, part of Satan's work, so avoid them so that you may succeed." He recited the verse up to: "So will you not desist?" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! What will be the station of a person who died while he used to drink wine?" So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "There is no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds regarding what they ate" to the end of the verse. The narrator says: A man said to Qatadah: "Did you yourself hear this hadith from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied: "Yes!" A man asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did you yourself hear this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Yes." (The narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are:) "It was narrated to me by one who did not lie. By Allah! We did not lie, nor did we even know what lying was." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is also recorded in the Sahih, but without this wording.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
