Sayyiduna Abu Waqid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said: "O Messenger of Allah! We live in a land where hunger afflicts us, so what of carrion is it permissible for us to use?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you have nothing to cook, nothing for the evening meal, and no vegetables to cook either, then you may use it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Many hadiths have already preceded concerning milking animals without their owners' permission, eating something from orchards, and similar matters; they appeared in the chapters on usurpation and on buying and selling.
