Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Some people were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): Bring us something to eat! Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went. He took one sa' of fine dates in exchange for two sa' of dates, since their dates were of a lower quality. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked those dates, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: Where have these dates come from? He told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he had given two sa' of dates in exchange for one sa'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring our dates back to us.
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and Ahmad's narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه ابو يعلي فى المسند (5710) اخرجه احمد فى المسند (21/2) ، أخرجه مسند أحمد برقم: 4714، وأخرجه المعجم الكبير للطبراني برقم: 1028»
Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I had some dates. I sold them in the market for dates finer than them and received half their quantity. Then I brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: I have not seen dates as fine as these today. O Bilal! Where have these come from? I told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what I had done, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go! Return these dates to their owner and take back your dates, then sell those dates for wheat or barley, and then buy these dates with that. I did so, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Dates for dates are to be exchanged like for like; wheat for wheat like for like; barley for barley like for like; salt for salt like for like; silver for silver like for like by weight. Whatever extra payment there is will count as usury (riba)."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded something similar. He added these words: "When the two sides are two different things, then there is no harm, even if it is one for ten." The narrators of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih; however, he recorded it as a narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sa'id did not hear from Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). This report also has some chains in al-Tabarani, some of which state that it is reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him); these narrations are shorter than this one, and their narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). Other narrations are reported from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) from Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), similar to the first narration, but their chain is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Dates called "Rayyan" were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Where did you get these? The people said: We had "ba'l" dates, and we sold two sa' of them for one sa'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Return this to its owner.
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it; however, he has these words: "Return it to its owner, then sell it (that is, your own dates) for 'ayn (that is, gold or silver), and then buy these dates (with that gold or silver)." Its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed a desire for dates, and a sa' of Ajwah dates was brought to him. When it came to him, he was surprised at it and asked: Where did you get these? The people said: We sold two sa' of dates and then brought (back) one sa'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Return it! Return it! We have no need of it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Hibban bin Abdullah, who is da'if (weak).

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الاوسط (751) ، أخرجه المعجم الأوسط للطبراني برقم: 751، وأخرجه شرح معاني الآثار برقم: 5761»
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not sell one dinar for two dinars, do not sell one dirham for two dirhams, and do not sell one sa' for two sa'. I fear rama' for you. (The narrator says:) "Rama'" means usury (riba). A man stood up before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! What is your view of a man who sells one horse for several horses, or a fine she-camel for camels? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no harm in it as long as the exchange is hand to hand.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Janab, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) report that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gold for gold is to be exchanged like for like, and silver for silver like for like, and on the spot. Whoever gives more or asks for more has engaged in usury (riba)." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is in the "Sahih".
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Shurahbil bin Sa'd, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while the majority declared him da'if (weak).

Whoever gives more or seeks more has committed usury (riba)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it as a narration of Abd al-Mu'min from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); I do not know this narrator named Abd al-Mu'min, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abu al-Zubayr al-Makki narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) about exchanging wheat for dates with an excess, hand to hand. He said: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to sell one sa' of wheat for six sa' of dates, hand to hand. But if both sides are of one and the same kind (of grain), then there is no good in it; however, if both sides are equal, then the ruling is different."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley and salt for salt are to be exchanged like for like. Whoever gives extra or seeks extra has engaged in usury (riba). It was said: O Messenger of Allah! The man in charge of your dates buys one sa' for two sa'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for that man, and he said: O Messenger of Allah! My dates are of such and such a kind; people take them only when I give them extra. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not do that. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is in the "Sahih" in abridged form.

Abu al-Zubayr al-Makki narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to give a fatwa (that it is permissible to exchange) one dinar for two dinars. Sayyiduna Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) used harsh words about this, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Abu Usayd! I did not think that anyone who knows my kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say words like these about me. Sayyiduna Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A dinar for a dinar, a dirham for a dirham, a sa' of wheat for a sa' of wheat, a sa' of barley for a sa' of barley, a sa' of salt for a sa' of salt (is how they are to be exchanged); there is to be no extra payment between the two." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I used to give this fatwa from my own opinion; I had not heard any report about it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain is hasan (good).
