Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Rafi', kill every dog. The narrator says: I found some women of the Ansar near al-Baqi', and they had a dog. Those women said: O Abu Rafi', the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has made us (our homes) self-sufficient (or: has provided for our belongings), and this dog acts as a barrier for us. By Allah, no one can come to us before one of us women gets up, goes out and stands between this dog and the one coming. Mention this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Rafi', kill it, for Allah Almighty will protect them (the women).

In one narration the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to kill the dogs. I went out and began killing dogs; every dog I saw, I killed. A dog was circling around a house, and as I was about to kill it, someone called out to me from inside that house: O servant of Allah, what do you intend to do? I replied: I want to kill this dog. That woman said: I am a woman left without protection; this dog keeps wild beasts away from me and alerts me (by barking) to anyone coming. Then Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). After this the narrator mentioned the hadith as before.
Al-Bazzar and Ahmad recorded it with various chains, the narrators of some of which are the narrators of the Sahih. Al-Tabarani also recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir.

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) sought permission to come in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, but he was slow to come in, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his cloak, got up and went towards him; he was standing at the door. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We had given you permission. He replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image. (The narrator says:) Then they found a puppy in the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to kill every dog I came across. A woman who lived away from the settlement had a dog that would bark to guard her. I felt pity for that woman and left that dog alone. When I came back, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me, so I went back to the dog and killed it. The people said: O Messenger of Allah, of this particular kind of animal that you have ordered to be killed, what is lawful for us? So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They ask you what has been made lawful for them. Say: The good things have been made lawful for you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever keeps a dog that is not for hunting or for (guarding) livestock, one qirat is deducted from his deeds every day."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Bujayr bin Abi Bujayr; al-Mizzi says after a hadith he narrated through his chain: It is a hasan (good) hadith. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith reported from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed: (The people said:) Of this kind of creature which you have ordered to be killed, what is lawful for us? So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They ask you what has been made lawful for them."

He said: Jibril has not come to me for three days. (The narrator says:) There was a puppy in his house, and on his order it was killed.
