Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 6096

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) sought permission to come in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, but he was slow to come in, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his cloak, got up and went towards him; he was standing at the door. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We had given you permission. He replied: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image. (The narrator says:) Then they found a puppy in the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to kill every dog I came across. A woman who lived away from the settlement had a dog that would bark to guard her. I felt pity for that woman and left that dog alone. When I came back, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me, so I went back to the dog and killed it. The people said: O Messenger of Allah, of this particular kind of animal that you have ordered to be killed, what is lawful for us? So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They ask you what has been made lawful for them. Say: The good things have been made lawful for you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, and he is da'if (weak).
