Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man said: O Messenger of Allah! What is Islam? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you submit your heart, and that the Muslims are safe from your tongue and your hand." The man asked: Which Islam is most virtuous? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith." He said: What is faith? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you believe in Allah Almighty, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the resurrection after death." He asked: Which faith is most virtuous? He said: "Hijrah (emigration)." He said: What is meant by hijrah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you dissociate yourself from evil." He asked: Which hijrah is most virtuous? He said: "Jihad." He asked: What is meant by jihad? (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "That you fight the disbelievers when you meet them." He asked: Which jihad is most virtuous? He said: "(That of the one) whose horse is hamstrung and whose blood is shed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then there are two deeds that are the most virtuous of all deeds, except for one who does the like of them: an accepted (mabrur) Hajj or an Umrah."
