Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every servant has three friends. One friend says: Whatever you spent is yours, and whatever you held back is not yours. This is a person's wealth." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith, which will come in full in the chapter on abstinence (zuhd), if Allah wills.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), though there is criticism about some of them.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will raise up two of His servants to whom He had given abundant wealth and children. He will ask one of them: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! He will say: O my Lord! Here I am at Your service, and all good fortune comes from You. The Lord will say: Did I not give you abundant wealth and children? He will say: Yes, O my Lord! The Lord will say: What did you do with what I gave you? He will reply: I left it for my children, fearing that poverty might befall them. The Lord will say: If you had knowledge, you would laugh little and weep much. That which you feared for them, I have sent down upon them. Then the Lord will say to the other person: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! He will say: Here I am at Your service, O my Lord, and all good fortune comes from You. The Lord will ask him: Did I not give you abundant wealth and children? He will say: Yes, O my Lord! The Lord will say: What did you do with what I gave you? He will say: I spent it in obedience to You, and for my children after me I relied upon Your generosity. The Lord will say: If you had knowledge, you would laugh much and weep little. That which you trusted for them, I have sent down upon them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin al-Safar, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to his Companions, and in his hand was a piece of gold. He said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): What would Muhammad say before his Lord if he died while this was with him? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it before rising from there. He said: It would not please me that "the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)" had (this is how it is mentioned in the printed text, but perhaps the word "Companions" is superfluous here and the original wording should be: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had") gold or silver as much as this mountain, and he pointed towards Mount Uhud as he said this, and then he spent it in the path of Allah and left a single dinar of it (that is, he would not like to leave even one dinar). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he did not leave (as inheritance) any dinar, any dirham, any male slave or any female slave. He left his coat of mail, which was pledged with a Jewish man for thirty sa' of barley; he himself ate from that barley and fed his household with it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had seven dinars which he had placed with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). When he fell ill, he said: O Aishah! Send that gold to Ali. Then he fainted. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) remained occupied because of the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this several times. Each time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would faint, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) would remain occupied with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Finally the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent those dinars to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) gave them in charity. Then on the night of Monday the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the throes of death. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent her lamp to a woman among her female acquaintances and said: Put some of the ghee from your skin-container into our lamp for us, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has entered the throes of death.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him ten thousand (dirhams or dinars). He took them and began putting them into various purses. His wife asked him: Where will you take these? He replied: I will take them to those who will prove most profitable for us in them. I will leave only a little of it. When what they had was used up, his wife said to him: Now go to some of your friends to whom you gave those things, who used to bring you profit, and take some of that profit. He kept arguing with her and putting her off until the matter dragged on. Then he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "If a houri were to reveal one of her fingers, every living being would perceive its fragrance. So should I leave those houris for your sake? By Allah! You women are more deserving that I leave you for their sake."

Malik al-Dar narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) took four hundred dinars, put them in a purse and said to his servant: "Take them to Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah, then stay in his house for a while and observe what he does with them." The servant took the money to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "The Commander of the Believers says: 'Spend these on some of your needs.'" Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah Almighty keep ties with him and have mercy on him." Then he said: "O girl, come here! Take these seven dinars to so-and-so, and these five to so-and-so," until he had spent all the money. The servant returned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about what he had found. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had the same amount prepared for Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "Take it to Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), stay with him and observe what he does." The servant took the money to Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "The Commander of the Believers has sent this to you, and he says: 'Use it for some of your needs.'" Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on him and keep ties with him. O girl, come here! Take such an amount to the house of so-and-so, and take such an amount to the house of so-and-so." The wife of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) looked in and said: "By Allah, we too are poor, so give us something as well." At that point only two dinars were left in the purse, so Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) gave those two dinars to her. The servant returned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about this, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was pleased by it and said: "They are brothers, one of a kind with each other."

Amr bin Hayyan al-Ta'i narrates: Rafi' bin Umayrah al-Sunaysi used to provide food for the people of three mosques and give them qartamah, that is, hays, to drink, while he himself had only one shirt; it was the same one for spending the night and the same one for Friday.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. I do not know the narrator named Amr bin Hayyan.
