Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will raise up two of His servants to whom He had given abundant wealth and children. He will ask one of them: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! He will say: O my Lord! Here I am at Your service, and all good fortune comes from You. The Lord will say: Did I not give you abundant wealth and children? He will say: Yes, O my Lord! The Lord will say: What did you do with what I gave you? He will reply: I left it for my children, fearing that poverty might befall them. The Lord will say: If you had knowledge, you would laugh little and weep much. That which you feared for them, I have sent down upon them. Then the Lord will say to the other person: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! He will say: Here I am at Your service, O my Lord, and all good fortune comes from You. The Lord will ask him: Did I not give you abundant wealth and children? He will say: Yes, O my Lord! The Lord will say: What did you do with what I gave you? He will say: I spent it in obedience to You, and for my children after me I relied upon Your generosity. The Lord will say: If you had knowledge, you would laugh much and weep little. That which you trusted for them, I have sent down upon them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin al-Safar, who is da'if (weak).
