Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to his Companions, and in his hand was a piece of gold. He said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): What would Muhammad say before his Lord if he died while this was with him? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it before rising from there. He said: It would not please me that "the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)" had (this is how it is mentioned in the printed text, but perhaps the word "Companions" is superfluous here and the original wording should be: "Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had") gold or silver as much as this mountain, and he pointed towards Mount Uhud as he said this, and then he spent it in the path of Allah and left a single dinar of it (that is, he would not like to leave even one dinar). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he did not leave (as inheritance) any dinar, any dirham, any male slave or any female slave. He left his coat of mail, which was pledged with a Jewish man for thirty sa' of barley; he himself ate from that barley and fed his household with it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
