Storing up

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever dies, on whatever day he dies, and leaves behind something yellow or white (gold or silver), he will be branded with it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Baqiyyah, and he is a mudallis (one who commits tadlis).

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever ties up the mouth of (a bag of) gold or silver (that is, hoards it away) and does not spend it in the way of Allah, on the Day of Resurrection it will become burning embers with which he will be branded."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Ahmad recorded a similar report, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). It also has another chain whose narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Bilal, die in a state of poverty; do not die in a state of wealth." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How can that be for me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever provision you are given, do not store it away, and when you are asked for something, do not refuse to give." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! How can that be for me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is either this or the Fire."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Talhah bin Zayd al-Qurashi, and he is da'if (weak).

Qays bin Abi Hazim narrates: We went to Sa'd bin Mas'ud to visit him in his illness, and he said: "I do not understand what these people are saying, but would that what is in this chest of mine were live coals." When he passed away and the people looked, there were a thousand or perhaps two thousand (dirhams or dinars) in it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man passed away who left behind a debt of two dinars owed by him, and there was no means of paying it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to lead his funeral prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You offer the funeral prayer for your companion." Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "I will pay it on his behalf." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and offered his funeral prayer.

He also mentioned this report: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man passed away and left behind two dinars, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are two things to be branded with."

In one narration the wording is: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man passed away and no shroud could be found for him. A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Look inside the inner part of his waist-wrapper." One or two dinars were found there, and he said: "These are two things to be branded with."

In one narration the wording is: A man from the people of the Suffah passed away, and one dinar was found in his waist-wrapper, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is one thing to be branded with." Then another man passed away, and two dinars were found in his waist-wrapper, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are two things to be branded with."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The narrators of some of its chains are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Shahr bin Hawshab, whose case is different: he is thiqah (trustworthy), but there is criticism of him. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Other hadith of this kind will come later in the chapter on zuhd (abstinence), if Allah wills.

Abdullah bin Abi al-Hudhayl narrates: We went to Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), and I saw dirhams lying uncovered in his house, so I asked: "What is this?" He said: "I sold such-and-such land of mine. I will spend it, because I do not think anyone has more right to it than I do."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator who is not named.

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, and at that time I had some dates with me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are these for?" I said: "I have stored them away for the winter." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not fear that because of it you will see vapour (that is, smoke) in Hell?"

In one narration the wording is: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give us something to eat!" I presented a few handfuls of dates to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal, give more." I presented more three times. I said: "Now only that which I had stored away for the Messenger of Allah remains." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spend, and do not fear any shortage from the Owner of the Throne."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The first narration contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zabalah, and the second contains Talhah bin Zayd al-Qurashi, and both of them are da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he had a heap of dates with him. He said: "O Bilal, what is this for?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have stored it away for you and for your guests." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not fear that vapour will rise over it in Hell? O Bilal, spend, and do not fear any shortage from the Owner of the Throne."
Al-Tabarani recorded all of these reports in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Qays bin al-Rabi', whom Shu'bah and al-Thawri declared thiqah (trustworthy), and there is criticism of him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) in his illness, and he brought out a heap of dates before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Bilal, what are these for?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have stored them away for you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not fear that vapour may be appointed for you in Hell? O Bilal! Spend, and do not fear any shortage from the Owner of the Throne."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Mubarak bin Fadalah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy), but there is criticism of him; its remaining narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. Al-Tabarani also recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with a hasan (good) chain.
