Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A tribe of the Ansar came, who were called Banu Salimah; they belonged to the clan of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Banu Salimah, who is your chief?" The people replied: "Jadd bin Qays, and we consider him a miser." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What illness is greater than miserliness?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu al-Rabi' al-Samman, and he is da'if (weak).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Other hadith of this kind will come later in the chapter on virtues (manaqib), if Allah wills.

Abu Salih reports the following account from one of the Companions: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! So-and-so has a date palm in my garden; order him to sell it or to give it to me as a gift." The man came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Do so, and in exchange you will get a date palm in Paradise." He did not agree, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the greatest miser of all."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "So-and-so has a cluster (of a date palm) in my garden. That man causes me trouble, and the presence of his date cluster is burdensome to me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to call that man and said: "Sell me your cluster that is in so-and-so's garden." He said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then give it to me as a gift." He said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then sell it to me in exchange for a cluster of dates in Paradise." He said: "No, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not seen anyone more miserly than you, except the one who is miserly with the greeting of salam."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil; there is criticism of him, and he has also been declared trustworthy.

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu al-Qayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) carrying some dates. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached towards him to take a handful of dates from him and spread them before his Companions, but he pressed the edge of his cloak to his stomach and chest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty increase your stinginess."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Jumhan, whom a group declared thiqah (trustworthy), and there is disagreement about him; its remaining narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The remaining chains of the hadith of this chapter will come in the chapter on zuhd (abstinence).
