Malik al-Dar narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) took four hundred dinars, put them in a purse and said to his servant: "Take them to Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah, then stay in his house for a while and observe what he does with them." The servant took the money to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "The Commander of the Believers says: 'Spend these on some of your needs.'" Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah Almighty keep ties with him and have mercy on him." Then he said: "O girl, come here! Take these seven dinars to so-and-so, and these five to so-and-so," until he had spent all the money. The servant returned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about what he had found. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had the same amount prepared for Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "Take it to Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), stay with him and observe what he does." The servant took the money to Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "The Commander of the Believers has sent this to you, and he says: 'Use it for some of your needs.'" Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on him and keep ties with him. O girl, come here! Take such an amount to the house of so-and-so, and take such an amount to the house of so-and-so." The wife of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) looked in and said: "By Allah, we too are poor, so give us something as well." At that point only two dinars were left in the purse, so Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) gave those two dinars to her. The servant returned to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him about this, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was pleased by it and said: "They are brothers, one of a kind with each other."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. I do not know the man named Malik al-Dar; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
