Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man died. We washed him, shrouded him and applied perfume (hanut) to him. Then we brought his body to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he would lead his funeral prayer. We said: "Will you lead his funeral prayer?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked one step, then asked: "Is there any debt owed by him?" I said: "Two dinars." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. Then Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) took the payment of them upon himself. We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Paying the two dinars is my responsibility." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will fulfil the creditor's right, and the deceased will be free of it." Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led that man's funeral prayer. A day later the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has become of the two dinars?" I said: "That man only died yesterday." The narrator says: Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the following day and said: "I have paid them both." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now his skin has been cooled for him."
(Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded it in abridged form.
Imam Ahmad and Imam Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Isa bin Sadaqah bin Abbad al-Yashkuri narrates: I went with Abu Isa to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). We said: "Narrate to us a hadith through which Allah Almighty may benefit us." Then I heard him say: "Whoever among you is able to die in a state where he owes no debt, let him do so. For I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the bier of a man who owed a debt was brought to him, and he said: 'I will not lead his funeral prayer until you take responsibility for his debt; then my offering the funeral prayer will benefit him.' The people did not take his debt upon themselves, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not offer his funeral prayer. He said: 'He will remain held in pledge in his grave.'"
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it. Abu Hatim declared the narrator Isa thiqah (trustworthy), and others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when (the body of) a man was brought so that he would offer the funeral prayer for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there any debt owed by your companion?" The people said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What benefit will it be to you that I lead the funeral prayer of a man whose soul is held in pledge in his grave? His soul will not ascend to the heavens. If someone becomes a guarantor for his debt, then I will lead his funeral prayer, and in that case my prayer will benefit him."
