Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man died. The people passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and requested him to lead his funeral prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there any debt owed by your companion?" The people said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah! Two dinars." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Offer the funeral prayer for your companion yourselves." A man from among the deceased's relatives said: "They are my responsibility." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are they now your responsibility, and is he free of them?" The man said: "Yes." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led that man's funeral prayer. After that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met that person and asked: "What have you done?" He said: "I have not yet finished." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring coolness to your companion, and pay it off quickly." Then the man met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have paid it off." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now you have brought coolness to your companion."
Imam Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Hakim bin Nafi', whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy) and Abu Zur'ah called da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
