Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Ummah will divide into seventy-odd sects. Among them, the greatest trial for my Ummah will be the people who judge matters by analogy based on their own opinion; they will make the unlawful lawful and the lawful unlawful." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded the opening part of this report.
Al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

When they act (according to opinion), they will go astray and lead others astray."

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hold opinion in suspicion in matters of religion! I remember about myself that I did not accept the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a matter, although in that situation I spared no effort in seeking the truth. That was on the day of the incident of Abu Jandal (at the Treaty of Hudaybiyah), when a written treaty was about to be made between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people of Makkah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Write: 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' (seeking blessing through the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful). They said: Do you think that we have affirmed what you say? Write: 'Bismika Allahumma' (O Allah, seeking blessing through Your name). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) agreed to this, but I did not accept it, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: O Umar, you see that I have agreed, and still you refuse? Sayyiduna Umar said: So I agreed.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Hunayn, this surah was revealed to him: "When the help of Allah and the victory come." After this comes the whole incident (in which it is later mentioned:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali bin Abi Talib! O Fatimah bint Muhammad! The help of Allah and the victory have come, and I have seen people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes. So I declare my Lord free of every defect, together with His praise, and I seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is Ever-Accepting of repentance. O Ali, after me there will be jihad against the believers. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: On what basis will we fight the believers, those who say: We believe in Allah Almighty? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Because of introducing new things into the religion (they will be fought), when they act on the basis of opinion; and there is no room for opinion in the religion, because the religion has come from the Lord: His command and His prohibition prevail in it. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if we face a matter about which no Qur'an has been revealed and for which there is no Sunnah of yours? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will present that matter to a council (shura) of the worshippers from among the believers, and do not give a judgement on it based on the opinion of any one person. If I were to appoint anyone as my successor, no one would be more entitled than you, because you accepted Islam early and you are related to the Messenger of Allah (and you are also my son-in-law). The leader of the believing women is your wife, and before all of this there were the trials Abu Talib endured on my account, at the time when the Qur'an was being revealed; so I am also very keen to look after his children for his sake.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Kaysan, about whom Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected).
