Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: None of you should be an "imma'ah"! The people asked: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! What is meant by "imma'ah"? He said: That you say: I am with the people; if they are guided, I will be guided too, and if they go astray, I will go astray too. Beware! Each one of you should resolve within himself that if the people disbelieve, he will not disbelieve.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains al-Mas'udi, who suffered from mental confusion (ikhtilat), and its remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
