Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 850

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: None of you should blindly follow (taqlid) another person in his religion, such that if that (other person) believes, he too believes, and if he disbelieves, he too disbelieves. If you must follow someone, then follow the one who has died, for the living person is not safe from trial (fitnah).
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
