Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Jamuh (may Allah be pleased with him) states that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A servant does not become worthy of pure faith until he loves someone for the sake of Allah Almighty and hates someone for the sake of Allah Almighty. When he loves for the sake of Allah Almighty and hates for the sake of Allah Almighty, he becomes deserving of the friendship (wilayah) of Allah Almighty. (And in a hadith qudsi, Allah Almighty says:) 'Among My servants, My friends (awliya'), and among My creation, My beloved ones, are those who are mentioned when I am mentioned, and I am mentioned when they are mentioned.'"
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Rishdin bin Sa'd, and it is munqati' (broken) and da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Hamiq (may Allah be pleased with him) states that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A person cannot find pure faith until he loves someone for the sake of Allah Almighty and hates someone for the sake of Allah Almighty. When he loves for the sake of Allah Almighty and hates for the sake of Allah Almighty, he becomes deserving of friendship (wilayah). It is reported about Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the best (form of) faith, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you love for the sake of Allah Almighty, hate for the sake of Allah Almighty, and use your tongue in the remembrance of Allah." Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Messenger of Allah! And what else?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you like for people what you like for yourself, and dislike for people what you dislike for yourself."
In another narration these words are added: "And that you speak good or else remain silent."
The first narration contains Rishdin bin Sa'd and the second contains Ibn Lahi'ah, and both of these narrators are da'if (weak). Imam Ahmad recorded both narrations.

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) states: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he asked: "Which handhold of Islam is the firmest?" The people said: "Prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is good, but that is not what is meant." The people said: "Fasting in Ramadan." He said: "It too is good, but that is not what is meant." The people said: "Jihad." He said: "It too is good, but that is not what is meant." Then he said: "The firmest handhold of Islam is that you love for the sake of Allah Almighty and hate for the sake of Allah."
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, whom most (scholars) declared da'if (weak).

Someone said: "Prayer and zakah." Someone said: "Jihad." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deed most beloved to Allah Almighty is to love someone for the sake of Allah Almighty and to hate someone for the sake of Allah Almighty."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded a part of this narration.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a person whose name has not been mentioned.

(Here the narrator Hashim reported these words:) Whoever would be pleased to taste the flavour of faith should love a person whom he loves only for the sake of Allah Almighty."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Mas'ud! Which handhold of faith is the firmest?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The firmest handhold of Islam is friendship for the sake of Allah Almighty, love for the sake of Allah Almighty, and hatred for the sake of Allah Almighty." After this the narrator mentioned the complete hadith; the full narration will come in the chapter on knowledge.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains a narrator, Aqil bin al-Ja'd, about whom Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are denounced).

Mujahid reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): He said to me: Love for the sake of Allah Almighty! Hate for the sake of Allah Almighty, befriend for the sake of Allah Almighty, and take as enemy for the sake of Allah Almighty, for the friendship (wilayah) of Allah Almighty can be reached only through this (deed). And however much a man may have prayed and fasted, he cannot find the taste of faith until he becomes like this. The brotherhood of people has come to be over worldly matters.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, whom most (scholars) declared da'if (weak). Before this, the hadith of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Hamiq (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed, concerning the person who becomes angry for the sake of Allah Almighty and is pleased for the sake of Allah Almighty.
