Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three things are destructive, three things are saving, three things are expiations, and three things are (means of raising) ranks. As for the destructive things, they are: avarice that is obeyed, desire that is followed, and a man's being self-admiring. As for the saving things, they are: being just in anger and in contentment (that is, in every state), moderation in poverty and in wealth (in every state), and fearing Allah Almighty in secret and in public (in every state). As for the things that are expiations, they are: waiting for one prayer after another prayer, performing ablution thoroughly in severe cold, and taking steps (that is, walking from far) to the congregational prayers. As for the things that are (means of raising) ranks, they are: feeding (others), spreading (the greeting of) peace, and performing (voluntary) prayer at night while people are asleep."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, and also a narrator who could not be identified.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Three things are expiations, three things are a means of raising ranks, three things are saving, and three things are destructive. As for the things that are expiations, they are: performing ablution thoroughly in severe cold, waiting for one prayer after another prayer, and taking steps (that is, walking from far) to perform Jumu'ah (or the congregational prayer). As for the things that are a means of raising ranks, they are: feeding (others), spreading (the greeting of) peace, and performing (voluntary) prayer at night at a time when people are asleep. As for the saving things, they are: being just in anger and in contentment (in every state), moderation in poverty and in wealth (in every state), and continuing to fear Allah Almighty in secret and in public (in every state). As for the destructive things, they are: avarice that is obeyed, desire that is followed, and a man's being self-admiring."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded part of it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with these words: "A man's being self-admiring is part of arrogance."
Its chain contains a narrator, Za'idah bin Abi al-Ruqad, and a narrator, Ziyad al-Numayri; there is disagreement about using either of them as evidence.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported a similar narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; the chains of both the narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and the narration from Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) contain a narrator, Muhammad bin Awn al-Khurasani, and he is extremely da'if (weak).
