Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that a man of the Ansar freed a slave of his, to become free after his death, and he had no other wealth. This news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will buy him from me?" Sayyiduna Nu'aym bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) bought him for 800 dirhams, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the price to the owner. I heard Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: That Coptic slave died in the very first year.

Amr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) say that this Coptic slave died the previous year, during the governorship of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard about that slave and sold the slave, and said: "When a man is poor, let him begin with himself first. If there is a surplus, then let him include along with himself those whom he supports; and if there is still a surplus, then let him give charity to others."

This news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have any other wealth?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who will buy him from me?" Nu'aym bin Abdullah al-Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) bought him for 800 dirhams. He brought the price to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it back to him and said: "Begin by spending in charity on yourself; if anything is left over, then on your family; if anything is still left over, then on your near relatives; and if anything is still left over, then to the right and left, on whomever your heart wishes."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for him and said: "Who will buy him from me?" Nu'aym bin Abdullah al-Nahham (may Allah be pleased with him) bought him for eight hundred dirhams. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned the price to his owner, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you is poor, let him begin with himself. Nu'aym bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) bought him for 800 dirhams, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the price back to the owner.

Ata bin Abi Rabah narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man of the Ansar freed his slave as a mudabbar while he himself was in need. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him and asked: "Have you freed your slave?" He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But you are the one in need of him." Then he said: "Who will buy him from me?" Sayyiduna Nu'aym bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will. So he bought him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the price and gave it to his owner.

Sharik bin Abdullah narrated from Salamah bin Kuhayl, from Ata and Abu al-Zubayr, from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man died leaving a mudabbar and a debt, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to sell him to pay his debt, and they sold him for 800.
Abu Bakr al-Naysaburi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sharik's statement that the man had died is an error on his part, because in the narration of al-A'mash from Salamah bin Kuhayl it says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the price to him and said: "Pay off your debt." Likewise Amr bin Dinar and Abu al-Zubayr narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the master of the mudabbar was alive on the day the mudabbar was sold.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The scholars of hadith have no doubt about Sharik's error in this; this error occurred for him and for others only because of what is in the following narration.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب المدبر / 21547
Ata bin Abi Rabah, Abu al-Zubayr and Amr bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on them) narrated that Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) told them that a man of the Ansar freed his slave (on the condition that he would be free) if something happened to him and he died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for the slave and sold him to Nu'aym bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), one of Banu Adi bin Ka'b.
His words "if something happened to him and he died" are part of the condition of manumission, not a report of the death of the one who freed him. It is from here that some narrators erred in mentioning the man's death at the time of the sale; his death was mentioned only within the condition of manumission on the day of the tadbir, and this is what the narration of the majority indicates.

Al-Daraqutni said after this hadith: This is an error on the part of Ibn Tarif; the correct (chain) is from Abd al-Malik, from Abu Ja'far, mursal.
The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: For Muhammad bin Tarif (may Allah have mercy on us and on him), one hadith got mixed into another, because the trustworthy narrators only narrated the following.

Muslim bin al-Hajjaj said: The narration of Ibn Fudayl from Abd al-Malik from Ata is a mistake in both the chain and the text.

Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Someone said: We have narrated from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sold only the service of the mudabbar. I said to him: "As far as I know, no one whose hadith is established has narrated this from Abu Ja'far; and even if someone whose hadith is established had narrated it, there would be no proof in it for you, for several reasons." He said: What are they? I said: "You do not accept a munqati' (broken) report as established even when nothing else contradicts it, so how can you accept as established a munqati' report that is contradicted by a connected, established one, if it does contradict it?" He said: Does it contradict it? I said: "It is not a (proper) hadith, that I should need to mention it." He said: Mention it according to what you hold about it. I said: "If it were established, it would be possible for me to say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sold the person of a mudabbar, as Jabir narrated, and the service of a mudabbar, as Muhammad bin Ali narrated."
He spoke at length in answering it. Abd al-Ghaffar bin al-Qasim narrated it with a connected chain from Abu Ja'far, from Jabir, but Ali bin al-Madini used to accuse this Abd al-Ghaffar of fabrication. Abu Shaybah Ibrahim bin Uthman also narrated it with a connected chain from Uthman bin Umayr, from Abu Ja'far, from Jabir; but Abu Shaybah is da'if (weak), and the likes of him are not used as proof. Something similar to the narration of Ata, Amr and Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir has also been narrated from Mujahid and Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, from Jabir.
