Abd al-Malik bin Abi Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that al-As bin Hisham died and left three sons, two from one mother and the third from another mother. Then one of those two died, leaving wealth and freed slaves, and his full brother inherited the wealth and the wala' of the slaves. Then the one who had inherited the wealth and the wala' of the slaves also died. He left a son and a brother. His son said: I will keep what my father had secured. His brother said: Not so; you secure only the wealth, but as for the wala' of the slaves: if my brother were to die, would I not be his heir? Then the dispute of the two was brought to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and he ruled the wala' of the slaves in favour of the brother.

Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) said that his father related that he was sitting with Aban bin Uthman bin Affan (may Allah have mercy on him) when a dispute between groups from Juhaynah and Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj was brought to him. A woman of the Juhaynah tribe was married to a man of Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj called Ibrahim bin Kulayb. That woman died. She left wealth and freed slaves, and her heirs were a son and her husband. Then her son also died, and the heirs of her son said: The wala' of the freed slaves is ours; her son had secured it. The Juhanis said: Not so; rather, they are the freed slaves of our woman, and since her child has died, their wala' is ours, and we are their heirs. So Aban bin Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) ruled the wala' of the freed slaves in favour of the Juhanis.
