Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in the Mosque of Fadikh, "Fadikh"—that is, the unripe date drink—was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he drank it. Because of this, the mosque was named the Mosque of Fadikh.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever drinks alcohol in this world will be deprived of it in the Hereafter (and will not be given alcohol there)."

Safiyyah bint Abi Ubaid says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw a child whose head had some hair cut and some left as it was. He said: Do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cutting children's hair in this manner?

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you eats food, he should not eat or drink with his left hand, for Satan eats and drinks with his left hand."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on one occasion the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader over some people. The people objected to his leadership. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found out, he stood up and said: "If you are objecting to his leadership, then this is nothing new; before this, you also objected to his father's leadership. By Allah! He was worthy of leadership and was the most beloved to me among the people, and now this son of his is, after him, the most beloved to me. Therefore, accept my advice to treat him well, for he is your best companion." Whenever Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated this hadith, he would always make an exception for Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw in a dream a black, disheveled-haired woman leaving Madinah and stopping at Mahya‘ah, that is, Juhfah. I interpreted it as meaning that the epidemics and afflictions of Madinah have been transferred to Juhfah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling or gifting the right of wala.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had a ring made of gold. People also had rings made of gold. One day the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up and said: "I used to wear this ring," then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, threw it away, and the people also threw away their rings.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bilal gives the call to prayer during the night, so keep eating and drinking until Ibn Umm Maktum gives the call to prayer."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fixed Dhu’l-Hulaifa as the miqat for the people of Madinah, Juhfa for the people of Sham, and Qarn for the people of Najd, and people say that Yalamlam was fixed as the miqat for the people of Yemen.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that there was a man from the Quraysh whom people used to deceive in trade. He mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should say: 'There is no deception in this transaction.'"

Asim bin Mundhir says that once we were practicing archery in our or Ubaidullah bin Abdullah’s garden when the time for prayer came. Ubaidullah stood up and went to the pond in the garden, where a camel’s skin was lying in the water. He began to perform ablution with that water. I said to him, “Are you performing ablution with this water while this skin is also lying in it?” He replied, “My father told me this hadith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘When water is two or three pitchers full, it does not become impure.’”

Yahya bin Ya’mar says that once we met Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). I said to him that there are some people among us who say that matters are in their own hands; if they wish, they act, and if they wish, they do not act. Upon hearing this, he said: When you return to those people, tell them that I am free from them and they are free from me. After saying this, he narrated this tradition: Once Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the court of Prophethood and said: O Muhammad! What is “Islam”? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Worship Allah and do not associate anyone with Him, and establish prayer, pay zakat, fast in Ramadan, and perform Hajj of the House of Allah.” He said: If I do these things, will I be called a “Muslim”? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes!” He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he asked: What is the definition of “Ihsan”? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Fear Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state, then know that He sees you.” He said: If I do this, will I become a “Muhsin”? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes!” He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he asked: What is the definition of “Iman”? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, life after death, Paradise and Hell, and in every decree.” He said: If I do this, will I be called a believer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Yes!” He said: You have spoken the truth.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain, however, there is this additional detail that Gabriel (peace be upon him) used to come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the form of Sayyiduna Dihyah Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The tribe of Aslam, may Allah keep it safe; the tribe of Ghifar, may Allah forgive it."

Muzabana means that fruits are sold in exchange for dates by measure, or grapes are sold in exchange for raisins by measure.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade deception in trade.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that knives should be sharpened beforehand, and that knives should be kept hidden from the animals, and that when any of you is about to slaughter an animal, he should slaughter it quickly (and avoid causing the animal to suffer).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make the use of the miswak obligatory upon yourselves, for it is a means of purification for the mouth and a cause of Allah's pleasure."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty likes His concessions to be acted upon just as He dislikes His disobedience."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In this Ummah too, forms will be transformed. Beware! This will happen to those who deny destiny or are heretics."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Once, in a dream, a bowl of milk was brought to me. I drank from it, then I gave the remainder to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Someone asked: O Messenger of Allah! What interpretation did you give to this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Knowledge."

Once, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw a shepherd grazing his goats in a filthy place while a better place was available, and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) had also seen it, so he said: O shepherd! Woe to you, take these goats somewhere else. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that every shepherd will be questioned about his flock.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade deception in trade.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the day of Eid, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, led the prayer before delivering the sermon, and did so without any call to prayer (adhan) or iqamah.

This same hadith is also narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty likes His concessions to be acted upon just as He dislikes His disobedience."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to stand and drink water, and eat food while walking (because during the preoccupation of jihad, where was the time for eating and drinking?).

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) touching the Black Stone and then kissing his hand, and he used to say: Since I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) doing this, I have never abandoned it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to offer the sacrifice at the Eidgah on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah and used to say that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also used to do the same.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about how many witnesses are sufficient to establish proof of breastfeeding. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One man and one woman."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, “Did you write this letter?” He admitted and said, “O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, there has been no change in my heart regarding faith. The real matter is that every man of the Quraysh has some supporter or family in Makkah who protects his relatives. I wrote this letter so that Allah, through it, might protect my family from some of them.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Allow me to strike off his neck?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Would you really kill him?” He said, “Yes, if you permit?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “How do you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said, ‘Do whatever you wish, I have forgiven you.’”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go by one route on the occasion of the two Eids and return by another route.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is Odd, and He loves odd numbers." Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says that for this reason, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to pay attention to odd numbers.

Ibn Awn says: I saw Ghaylan Qadari hanging on the gallows at the gate of Damascus.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of people is like that of one hundred camels among which not even one is fit for riding." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Other than a believing man, we do not know of anything better among a hundred things."
