Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: A necklace of Yemeni onyx inlaid with pieces of gold was given as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and all his (peace and blessings be upon him) pure wives were gathered in one house, while Umamah bint Abi al-As bin al-Rabi', a little girl, was playing with dirt in a corner of the house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think of this?" We looked at it and said: O Messenger of Allah! We have never seen anything more beautiful or more wonderful than this. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it back to me." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken it, he said: "By Allah! I will put this necklace on the neck of the one of my household who is most beloved to me." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The earth went dark between me and him (peace and blessings be upon him); I feared that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would put this necklace on the neck of someone other than me, and I think all the other wives felt the same as I felt, and we all sat silent and grieved. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came forward with it and put it on the neck of Umamah bint Abi al-As, and our grief was lifted.

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar said: Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' had appointed al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam as executor over his daughter Umamah and his estate. So al-Zubayr married her to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) after the death of Sayyidah Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) herself who had made this request. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred while Umamah bint Abi al-As was married to him, and she bore him no children. On that occasion Umm al-Haytham al-Nakha'iyyah composed these verses:
"O Umamah! The day you parted from your companion, (that grief) turned my locks white and weakened both my supports. She kept circling around him because of her need for him, and when she lost hope, she raised a loud lament."

Umamah bint Abi al-As, whose mother was Sayyidah Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). When Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he had (earlier) said to Umamah: "Do not marry, and if you do intend to marry, do not go against the opinion of al-Mughirah bin Nawfal." Then Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan sent her a proposal of marriage, so she came to al-Mughirah to consult him. Al-Mughirah said: I am better for you than he is, so entrust your affair to me. She did so, and al-Mughirah called some men and married her himself. Umamah bint Abi al-As died while married to al-Mughirah bin Nawfal, and she bore him no children, so no descendants of Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) remained.
An account of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Among them is Sayyidah Khadijah bint Khuwaylid bin Asad bin Abd al-Uzza bin Qusayy (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the very first wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and she was the mother of all his (peace and blessings be upon him) sons and daughters except Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who was from his (peace and blessings be upon him) slave-woman Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah.
