I asked about him and was told: This is Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). The next day I went to the mosque early, and found that he had gone before me and was praying. So I waited until he completed his prayer, then came to him from in front and greeted him with salam, and said: By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah. He said: Do you say it by Allah? I said: By Allah. He again said: By Allah? I said: By Allah. He again said: By Allah? I said: By Allah. The narrator said: Then he took hold of the knot of my cloak and pulled me towards him, and said: Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Allah Almighty says: "My love is due to those who love one another for My sake, who sit together for My sake, who give to one another for My sake, and who visit one another for My sake."

Abu Idris al-Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I entered the mosque of Hims and saw some men narrating hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Among them was a young man with large dark eyes and gleaming front teeth; when he spoke, all the people listened silently to his words, and when they disagreed over something, they accepted his opinion on it. He turned out to be Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). We sat with him, and I said: I love you. So he took hold of my knot (of garment) and pulled me towards him, until my knee touched his knee, then said: Shall I not give you glad tidings from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which he reports from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My love is due to those who love one another for My sake, sit together, visit one another, and give to one another."

Do not drink wine, for it is the key to every evil. Do not abandon the prayer deliberately, for whoever abandons the prayer deliberately, the protection of Allah is free of him. Do not contest authority with those who hold it, even if you see that it is your right. Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, the one deprived of reason, the one who died in the period between prophets (fatrah), and the one who died in childhood will be brought. The one deprived of reason will say: 'O my Lord, had You given me reason, the one to whom You gave reason would not have been more fortunate through his reason than me.' The one who died in childhood will say: 'O my Lord, had You given me a lifespan, the one to whom You gave a lifespan would not have been more fortunate through his lifespan than me.' The one who died in the period between prophets will say: 'O my Lord, had a messenger come to me from You, the person to whom a covenant came from You would not have been more fortunate through Your covenant than me.' Then the Lord Almighty will say: 'I am giving you a command; will you obey Me?' They will say: 'Yes, by Your might, O Lord!' He will say: 'Go and enter Hell' - though if they entered it, it would not harm them at all - then portions (of flame) will come out at them from the Fire, and they will think that it has destroyed everything that Allah created. Then they will be commanded a second time, and they will turn back likewise. Then the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: 'I created you with My knowledge, and to My knowledge you will return.' Then the Fire will seize them."

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the tribulations and described them as very great and severe. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the way out of them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Book of Allah. In it is the news of those before you, the tidings of what will come after you, and the judgement of what is between you. Whatever tyrant abandons it, Allah breaks him; and whoever seeks guidance in something other than it, Allah leads him astray. It is the firm rope of Allah, it is the wise Reminder, it is the straight path. It is the one which, when the jinn heard it, they said: 'Indeed, we have heard a wondrous Qur'an' [Al-Jinn: 1]. It is such that tongues do not differ concerning it, and much repetition does not make it worn out."

A'idhullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to them in Yemen. A woman of the tribe of Khawlan met him, with her twelve sons, having left their father in their house; the youngest of them was one whose beard had grown full. (Then) the woman stood and greeted Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) with salam - while two of her sons were holding her by the arms - and said: O man, who sent you? Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me." The woman said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent you, and you are the envoy of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Then will you not tell me, O envoy of the Messenger of Allah, what the right of a husband over his wife is? Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That she fears Allah as much as she is able, and listens and obeys." She said: I adjure you to tell me what the right of a husband over his wife is. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "Are you not content that you listen, obey, and fear Allah?" She said: Certainly, but I have left the father of these (boys) at home as a very old man. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Mu'adh! If you were to return to him and find that leprosy had torn his flesh and torn open his nostrils, and you found his two nostrils flowing with pus and blood, and then you put them in your mouth so that you might fulfil his right, you would never fulfil it."
