Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Shall I not show you how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution? So he called for a vessel of water. He took a handful of water, rinsed his mouth and put water into his nose; then he took another handful, gathered it in both hands and washed his face; then he took another handful and washed his right hand; then he took one more handful and washed his left hand; then he took a fistful of water, lowered his hand and wiped his head and ears with it; then he took one more handful and sprinkled it over his foot while it had a sandal on, and likewise the left foot, and he wiped the undersides of the sandals. Then he said: This is how (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Arbad bin Qays bin Juzayy bin Khalid bin Ja'far bin Kilab and Amir bin al-Tufayl bin Malik came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. The two of them reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting, and they sat down in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). Amir bin al-Tufayl said: O Muhammad, what will I get if I accept Islam? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will have what the Muslims have, and you will bear the responsibilities they bear." Amir bin al-Tufayl said: If I accept Islam, will you hand authority over to me after you? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is neither for you nor for your people; however, you may be given the reins of the horses." He said: I already hold the reins of the horses of Najd now; give me the open (nomadic) land, and you keep the settled (town) land. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." When he turned back from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Amir said: By Allah, I will certainly fill it (Madinah) against you with horses and men. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah will stop you." When Amir and Arbad went out, Amir said: O Arbad, I will keep Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) busy in conversation, and you strike him with the sword; for if you kill Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), people will do nothing more than accept the blood money and dislike war, and we will give them the blood money. Arbad said: Very well, I will do so. So the two of them came back to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and Amir said: O Muhammad, stand with me; I want to speak to you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up with him, and the two of them moved aside to the wall, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood with him to talk to him. Arbad wanted to draw the sword, but as soon as he placed his hand on the hilt of the sword, his hand dried up (froze) on the hilt, and he could not draw the sword, so Arbad was slower in striking than Amir expected. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned and saw Arbad and what he was doing, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved away from the two of them. When Amir and Arbad left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and reached the Harrah of Waqim, they dismounted there. Sa'd bin Mu'adh and Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came out to them and said: Get out, O enemies of Allah! May Allah curse you. Amir said: O Sa'd, who is this? He said: This is Usayd bin Hudayr al-Kata'ib. The narrator said: Then the two of them went out, until when they reached al-Raqm, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent a thunderbolt upon Arbad which killed him. And Amir set off until he reached a place called al-Harr, and Allah Almighty sent upon him a boil that seized him. Night overtook him in the house of a woman of Banu Salul. He would touch the boil on his throat and say: A gland like the gland of a camel, in the house of a woman of Banu Salul! By saying this he was expressing his dislike of dying in her house. Then he mounted his horse and galloped it, until he died upon it while returning. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning the two of them: "Allah knows what every female carries, and what the wombs fall short of or exceed" [Surah al-Ra'd: 8] up to: "You have no protector besides Him" [Surah al-Sajdah: 4]. The narrator said: The mu'aqqibat (the angels who come in succession) guard Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) by the command of Allah. Then he mentioned Arbad and what he had done, and recited: "It is He who shows you the lightning, as a cause of fear and of hope" [Surah al-Ra'd: 12] up to: "And He is severe in punishment" [Surah al-Ra'd: 13].
