It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A servant is born a believer, lives as a believer, but dies a disbeliever. And a servant is born a disbeliever, lives as a disbeliever, but dies a believer. And a servant spends part of his life doing the deeds of the fortunate, then what was written for him overtakes him, and he dies wretched. And a servant spends part of his life doing the deeds of the wretched, then what was written for him overtakes him, and he dies fortunate."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator thinks it is narrated from him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Jibril (peace be upon him) in his true form only twice. He said: As for the first time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him to show himself to him in his true form, and he showed him; so he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) filling the horizon. As for the second time, he was with him when he (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended, (which is mentioned) in the saying of Allah Almighty: "Then he drew near and came down, and was at a distance of two bow-lengths or even nearer. Then He revealed to His servant what He revealed" [Surah al-Najm: 9]. Then when Jibril (peace be upon him) sensed (the nearness of) his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, he returned to his true form. This is what is meant by the saying of Allah Almighty: "And he certainly saw him (Jibril) another time (in his true form), at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary" [Surah al-Najm: 13] "near which is the Garden of Refuge", up to the saying of Allah Almighty: "He certainly saw (one) of the greatest signs of his Lord" [Surah al-Najm: 18]. He said: "That was (the sign of) the (true) form of Jibril (peace be upon him)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were returning from the expedition of Hudaybiyah when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will keep watch over us tonight?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "I will, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will fall asleep." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked again: "Who will keep watch over us tonight?" I said again: "I will," until he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated it three times, and each time I said: "I will, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you it is." So I kept watch over them until, when dawn was approaching, the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came true for me - the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "You will fall asleep" - and I fell asleep. We did not wake up until the heat of the sun fell on our backs. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, performed ablution as he used to do and prayed the two sunnah units of Fajr, then he led us in the Fajr prayer. When he had finished, he said: "Had Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, wished that you not sleep through it, you would not have slept; but He wished that this (sunnah) be for those who come after you - or he said: will be - so whoever sleeps or forgets should do likewise." Then the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the camels of the people scattered. The people went out searching for them and brought back their camels, except the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Start (searching) from here." I started from where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had told me, and I found its halter wound around a tree in such a way that, by Allah, only a hand could have untied it. I brought it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I found its halter wound around a tree in such a way that only a hand could have untied it." And this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory" [Surah al-Fath: 1].

Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you will fall asleep." So they all slept until the sun rose. So-and-so and so-and-so woke up, among them Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not wake up, so he said: "Come down." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up and said: "Do as you used to do." When they had done so, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever among you sleeps or forgets should do likewise."

By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the religion of a servant is not upright until his tongue is upright, and his tongue is not upright until his heart is upright; and one whose neighbour is not safe from his mischief will not enter Paradise." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is his mischief?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "His oppression and injustice. And any man who acquires wealth unlawfully and spends from it will not be blessed in it; if he gives charity from it, it will not be accepted from him; and whatever remains will be his provision for the journey to the Fire. Indeed, the evil does not expiate the evil, but the good expiates the evil."

Umm al-Fayd, the freed slave-woman of Abd al-Malik bin Marwan, said: I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) say: Whoever makes this supplication on the evening of Arafah, as long as he does not ask for something sinful or for the severing of family ties, his supplication will certainly be answered: "Glory be to the One whose Throne is in the heaven; glory be to the One whose footstool is on the earth; glory be to the One whose path is in the sea; glory be to the One whose decree is (carried out) in the graves; glory be to the One whose mercy is in Paradise; glory be to the One whose authority is in Hell; glory be to the One whose spirit is in the air; glory be to the One who raised the heaven; glory be to the One who laid out the earth; glory be to the One from whom there is no escape except to Him." I asked: "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said sternly: "Yes."

Utayy al-Sa'di said: I set out in search of knowledge until I reached Kufah, and there was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) among the people of Kufah. I asked about him and was directed to him; he was in the great mosque. I came to him and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! I have travelled to you to acquire some knowledge from you; perhaps Allah will benefit us by it after you. He asked me: From which people are you? I said: A man from the people of Basrah. He said: From which (tribe)? I said: From this clan of Banu Sa'd. He said to me: O Sa'di! I shall certainly narrate to you, concerning your people, a hadith that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not direct you to a people who have much wealth and great might, from whom you could obtain a great deal of wealth? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who are they?" He said: They are this clan of Banu Sa'd, the people of the sands. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Banu Sa'd have a great share (of good) with Allah." (Then Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) O Sa'di, ask. So I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Is there any sign by which the Hour can be recognised? He had been reclining, and he sat up straight and said: O Sa'di! You have asked me what I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there any sign by which the Hour can be recognised? He said to me: "O Ibn Mas'ud! The Hour has signs and portents. Listen! Among the signs of the Hour is that children become a cause of anger, rain brings heat, and the wicked become exceedingly many. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that the liar is believed and the truthful is called a liar. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that the treacherous is trusted and the trustworthy is considered treacherous. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that feasts continue to be shared while ties of kinship are severed. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that the hypocrites of every tribe and the wicked of every market become its masters. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that mosques are adorned while hearts are ruined. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that the believer in his tribe becomes more abased than a small lowly sheep. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that men content themselves with men and women with women. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that mosques become numerous and pulpits are raised high. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that the ruins of the world are built up and its built places are ruined. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour are the police (officials of oppression), the slanderers and the fault-finders. O Ibn Mas'ud! Among the signs of the Hour is that children of fornication increase." I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! Will they be Muslims? He said: Yes. I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! And the Qur'an will be among them? He said: Yes. I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! How will that be? He said: "A time will come upon people when a man will divorce his wife, then deny her divorce and continue relations with her; so the two of them will be fornicators for as long as they remain so."

Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali said: I debated with the Qadariyyah (those who deny divine decree), and they put me in difficulty. So I came to Sayyiduna Imran bin al-Husayn al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Abu Nujayd! I debated with the Qadariyyah and they put me in difficulty; do you have any hadith to narrate to me, by which perhaps Allah will benefit me? He said: Perhaps if I narrate a hadith to you, you will close your ears to it as though you had not heard it. I said: That is exactly why I have come. He said: If Allah were to punish the inhabitants of the heavens and the inhabitants of the earth, He would punish them without being unjust; and if He were to admit them into His mercy, His mercy would be far more vast for them than their sins. It is just as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 40]. So whoever is punished, that is the truth, and whoever is shown mercy, that too is the truth. And if one of you had mountains of gold or silver and spent them in the way of Allah, then did not believe in divine decree, its good and its evil, it would be of no benefit to him. (Abu al-Aswad said:) So I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu al-Mundhir, tell him. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, you tell him. So Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a hadith just like the hadith of Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him).
