So they gathered under the canopy of the mosque, and he came to them, greeted them with salam, and commanded them not to quarrel about the Qur'an. He told them that whoever denies any part of it has denied the whole of it, and he told them that people used to quarrel (over differences of recitation) in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and they would recite before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would tell all of them that they were reciting correctly. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Tongues should not differ because of it (the Qur'an), and it does not wear out through much repetition, because the Shari'ah of Islam in it is one, its limits and its obligations are one." And if one mode (harf) were to command something and the other were to forbid it, and the obligations and limits in it differed (that would lead to discord), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned something else as well. And (Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) If I knew that anyone had more knowledge than me of what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and camels could reach him, I would certainly go to him so as to join his knowledge to mine. The Qur'an used to be presented to him (peace and blessings be upon him) every year (through Jibril (peace be upon him)), and I too would recite before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would tell me that I recited well, until in the year in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away it was presented twice. Then I recited before him (peace and blessings be upon him), so now I do not leave this (recitation) out of preference for someone else's.
