Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a rider came and made (his mount) kneel near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have come to you from a journey of nine days. I have exhausted my body, spent my nights awake, and my days thirsty, in order to ask you about two matters that have kept me sleepless. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What is your name?" He said: I am Zayd al-Khayl. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you are Zayd al-Khayr." He said: I ask you what the sign is of the one whom Allah intends (good for), and what the sign is of the one whom He does not intend. I love goodness, the people of goodness and the one who acts upon it; if I act upon it, I am certain of its reward, and if something of it escapes me, I yearn for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sign of Allah is in the one whom He intends, and also in the one whom He does not intend: if He wanted you for the Hereafter, He would have prepared you for it, and then He would not care in which valley you walked."
