It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with people who honour those living in luxury and look down upon the worshippers, and who act upon the Qur'an only as far as it agrees with their desires, and abandon whatever goes against their desires? In this way they believe in some (of its commands) and reject others. They strive for what is attained even without striving, namely the decreed destiny, the appointed term and the allotted provision; and they do not strive for what is not attained except by striving, namely the abundant reward, the appreciated effort (accepted by Allah), and the trade that never perishes."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in a prayer in which he either added something or left something out. Some of the people said: "Has something new (revelation) come about regarding the prayer?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing new has come about in it; had something new come about, I would have told you. But I am only a human being; I forget. So when I forget, remind me." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the remainder of his prayer, then made the two prostrations of forgetfulness, then said: "When one of you prays and does not know whether he added or left something out, let him act upon (what seems most) correct, then make two prostrations while sitting."

She searched for it but could not find it, so Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Woe to you! Search for it, for to me it is equal to Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both)." So she searched for it and found that she had swept it away with her rubbish. Written on that (stalk) was: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is not a believer whose neighbour is not safe from his mischief. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honour his guest; whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbour; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. Indeed, Allah loves the modest, the forbearing, the chaste, the one who refrains from asking; and He hates the shameless, the foul-mouthed, the one who begs persistently. Indeed, modesty is part of faith, and faith leads to Paradise; and shamelessness is part of foul speech, and foul speech leads to Hell."

Then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Most of the sins of the son of Adam are due to his tongue."

Ghalib al-Qattan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Kufah for trade and stayed near Imam al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him). On the night I intended to set off (back), he got up at night to pray tahajjud and passed by this verse: "Allah bears witness that there is no god but He, and (so do) the angels and the people of knowledge; He is maintaining justice. There is no god but He, the Almighty, the Wise. Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam." Then al-A'mash said: And I too bear witness to what Allah has borne witness to, and I entrust this testimony to Allah, and it is a trust with Allah: "Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam" [Surah Al Imran: 19]. He said this several times. I said (to myself): He has surely heard something about it. So in the morning I went to him and bade him farewell, then said: O Abu Muhammad! I heard you repeating this verse over and over. He said: Has what is in it (its virtue) not reached you? I said: I have been with you for a month and you have not narrated (it) to me. He said: By Allah! I will narrate it to you after a year. So I stayed (there) for a year and kept attending at his door. When the year had passed I said: O Abu Muhammad! The year has passed. He said: Abu Wa'il narrated to me from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection the one who held this (testimony) will be brought, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: My servant made a covenant with Me, and I am the most deserving of those who fulfil a covenant. Admit My servant into Paradise."
