Ghalib al-Qattan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Kufah for trade and stayed near Imam al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him). On the night I intended to set off (back), he got up at night to pray tahajjud and passed by this verse: "Allah bears witness that there is no god but He, and (so do) the angels and the people of knowledge; He is maintaining justice. There is no god but He, the Almighty, the Wise. Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam." Then al-A'mash said: And I too bear witness to what Allah has borne witness to, and I entrust this testimony to Allah, and it is a trust with Allah: "Indeed, the religion with Allah is Islam" [Surah Al Imran: 19]. He said this several times. I said (to myself): He has surely heard something about it. So in the morning I went to him and bade him farewell, then said: O Abu Muhammad! I heard you repeating this verse over and over. He said: Has what is in it (its virtue) not reached you? I said: I have been with you for a month and you have not narrated (it) to me. He said: By Allah! I will narrate it to you after a year. So I stayed (there) for a year and kept attending at his door. When the year had passed I said: O Abu Muhammad! The year has passed. He said: Abu Wa'il narrated to me from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection the one who held this (testimony) will be brought, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: My servant made a covenant with Me, and I am the most deserving of those who fulfil a covenant. Admit My servant into Paradise."
