It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went out (of his house), and nothing had brought him out but hunger; and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out, and nothing had brought him out either but hunger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to the two of them, and they both told him (peace and blessings be upon him) that nothing had brought them out but hunger. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come with us to the house of a man of the Ansar called Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan." (When they arrived,) he was not at home; he had gone to fetch water. His wife welcomed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) two companions, and spread something out for them, and they sat on it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her: "Where has Abu al-Haytham gone?" She said: He has gone to fetch sweet water for us. Not much time had passed before he came with a waterskin of water, hung it up, and intended to slaughter a sheep for them, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that. So he slaughtered a young goat for them, then went and brought clusters of dates, and they ate of that meat and of the unripe and ripe dates, and drank of the water. One of the two, either Abu Bakr or Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), said: This is among the blessings about which we will be questioned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The believer is not taken to task for any blessing he receives in the world; it is only the disbeliever who is taken to task."
