Kharijah (may Allah have mercy on him), the son of Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from his father that tranquility (sakinah, the state of revelation) came over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was at his side (peace and blessings be upon him), and the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh, and I never felt anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then that state was lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Write." So I wrote: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit back and those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives" [Surah al-Nisa: 95], the whole of the verses. He said: I wrote it on a bone, and Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him), who was blind, stood up when he heard the superiority of those who strive over those who sit back, and said: O Messenger of Allah, what of those believers who are not able to strive (in jihad)? Ibn Umm Maktum had not yet finished his words when tranquility came over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and his thigh (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh again, and I felt it as heavy the second time as I had the first time. Then that state was lifted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Read." I read: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit back" [Surah al-Nisa: 95], and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Except those who have a disability" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I added these words, and it is as if I can still see the place near the crack in the bone where I added it.

It is narrated from Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) that (Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when tranquility came over him (peace and blessings be upon him), or descended, and the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh, and I never felt anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt. Then when that state was lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Read." I read. He said: "Write: Not equal are those of the believers who sit back and those who strive in the way of Allah" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. Thereupon the blind Companion Amr bin Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, I have an impairment in my eyes. At this, tranquility came over him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh, and I never felt anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then when that state was lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Read." I read. He said: "Write: Except those who have a disability" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. I have never forgotten where I added it near the crack in the bone.

Ibn Abi al-Zinad narrates that his father (Abu al-Zinad, may Allah have mercy on him) told him that he obtained this letter from Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him): "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. To the servant of Allah, Mu'awiyah, the Commander of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with him), from Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers, and the mercy of Allah. I praise before you Allah, besides whom there is no god. To proceed: You have written asking me about the inheritance of the grandfather and the brothers. Indeed, the full extent of kalalah (one who dies leaving neither child nor father) and of many of the judgements made in these inheritances is known to none but Allah. After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we were present with the Caliphs in many of these matters, and we retained of them what we wished to retain, and now we give fatwa accordingly to those who ask us about inheritance."
