Kharijah (may Allah have mercy on him), the son of Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from his father that tranquility (sakinah, the state of revelation) came over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was at his side (peace and blessings be upon him), and the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh, and I never felt anything heavier than the thigh of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then that state was lifted from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Write." So I wrote: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit back and those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives" [Surah al-Nisa: 95], the whole of the verses. He said: I wrote it on a bone, and Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him), who was blind, stood up when he heard the superiority of those who strive over those who sit back, and said: O Messenger of Allah, what of those believers who are not able to strive (in jihad)? Ibn Umm Maktum had not yet finished his words when tranquility came over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and his thigh (peace and blessings be upon him) fell upon my thigh again, and I felt it as heavy the second time as I had the first time. Then that state was lifted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Read." I read: "Not equal are those of the believers who sit back" [Surah al-Nisa: 95], and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Except those who have a disability" [Surah al-Nisa: 95]. Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I added these words, and it is as if I can still see the place near the crack in the bone where I added it.
