Ibn Abi al-Zinad narrates that his father (Abu al-Zinad, may Allah have mercy on him) told him that he obtained this letter from Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him): "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. To the servant of Allah, Mu'awiyah, the Commander of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with him), from Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers, and the mercy of Allah. I praise before you Allah, besides whom there is no god. To proceed: You have written asking me about the inheritance of the grandfather and the brothers. Indeed, the full extent of kalalah (one who dies leaving neither child nor father) and of many of the judgements made in these inheritances is known to none but Allah. After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we were present with the Caliphs in many of these matters, and we retained of them what we wished to retain, and now we give fatwa accordingly to those who ask us about inheritance."
