Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we wrote the copies of the Qur'an (mushafs), I could not find a verse that I used to hear from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I found that verse with Khuzaymah bin Thabit al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): "Among the believers are men who have been true to the covenant they made with Allah; among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who is waiting, and they have not altered it in the least" [Surah al-Ahzab: 23]. Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And Khuzaymah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to be called Dhu al-Shahadatayn (the one with two testimonies).

Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he heard his father, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), say: When I was writing out the Qur'an, I could not find a verse of Surah al-Ahzab, though I used to hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite it. I searched for it and found it with Sayyiduna Khuzaymah bin Thabit al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): "Among the believers are men who have been true to the covenant they made with Allah" [Surah al-Ahzab: 23], so I added it to its surah in the copy of the Qur'an.

Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: On the day of Yamamah, many of those who recited the Qur'an were martyred; he mentioned about four hundred. I came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: If another battle takes place, the Qur'an will be lost (from people's hearts). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will not do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do." Then he sent for Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said the same: We will not do something that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do. Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: Then what harm is there for you in it? They both said: There is no harm for us; you have spoken the truth. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had it written on palm stalks and the shoulder blades of camels.
